6 new businesses + 3 closures in Birmingham this week

It’s a new week in The Magic City, and that means a new roundup of businesses popping up across town.
From a new go-kart racing facility in Irondale to an Indian fusion spot opening soon downtown, here are six businesses that should be on your radar. Plus, three local businesses we’ll miss.

1. K1 Speed | Irondale


K1 Speed’s first indoor go-kart racing track in Alabama has opened in Irondale.
The electric kart racing operator with 107 locations worldwide is located within The Hill at Grants Mill development. The much-anticipated indoor race track offers more than racing. In addition to the impressive track and karts for adults and kids, the facility includes plenty other amenities including arcade games, lounge and several food and drink options.

2. JA McWane Economic Education Center | Downtown Birmingham


Students from across central Alabama now have a new place to learn about money, careers and the economy in an interactive, hands-on environment. On June 11, Junior Achievement of Alabama opened the brand-new JA McWane Economic Education Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to teach financial literacy and career skills to middle and high school students.

3. E-Bike Oasis | Crestline

A locally-owned e-bike retailer is now open at the Shops on Montevallo, the shopping center along Montevallo Road in Birmingham’s Crestline neighborhood.
Ebike Oasis, a dedicated e-bike showroom and service center founded by a team of cycling enthusiasts, officially opened its third Alabama location at the Shops on Montevallo in late April. The store offers products from top electric bike brands, tune-ups, brakes, batteries and much more.

4. Curry Up Now | Downtown Birmingham

Curry Up Now, the popular California-based Indian street food eatery, is opening its first Alabama location near UAB on Wednesday, June 17.
The much-anticipated restaurant is located near UAB Hospital alongside Tropical Smoothie, Café, Qdoba and Chase Bank. In addition to regular menu items like tikka masala burritos and deconstructed samosas, Curry Up Now Magic City location is also revealing a new exclusive “Birmingham-only” menu item called Bama Butter Chicken.

5. Garage | The Summit

Magic City shoppers will soon have another spot to refresh their wardrobes. Garage Clothing, the Canadian fashion retailer known for its trend-forward denim, everyday basics and affordable styles, is opening a new store at The Summit.
Located next to Lizard Thicket and American Eagle Outfitters, the new shop joins The Summit’s growing lineup of fashion retailers, adding another option for casual apparel, denim, activewear and accessories.

6. Southern Steer Butchers | Hoover

A new option for premium meats and expert culinary advice is headed to the Birmingham metro area. Florida-based Southern Steer Butcher has announced it will open a new location in Hoover later this year.
Southern Steer Butcher opened its first storefront in Clearwater, Florida, in 2013, drawing inspiration from historic Northeastern butcher shops, according to the company’s website. The brand combines the personalized service of a traditional neighborhood market with a quick, modern shopping experience designed to let customers get in and out in under 10 minutes.
The Hoover location will be locally owned and operated, focusing on humanely raised, sustainably sourced and domestically raised meats, including beef, chicken, pork and seafood.

7. TrimTab Brewing | Birmingham

After more than a decade in the Magic City, one of Birmingham’s beloved craft breweries is preparing to pour its final pint. Today, TrimTab Brewing announced on social media that it will be closing its doors for good on July 4.
According to the post, TrimTab plans to continue sales of TrimTab IPA and Paradise Now in select markets.

8. Condado Tacos | Mountain Brook

After three years in Mountain Brook, Condado Tacos has closed its doors permanently.
The taco restaurant and bar located at 2800 Cahaba Village Plaza is currently listed as permanently closed on Google and Yelp, and removed from Condado’s official website.
9. Freddy’s Bistro + Bar | Homewood

After two years in Homewood, Freddy’s has decided to close its Homewood location on Oxmoor Road. According to a sign posted on the door, Freddy’s lease is ending in Homewood and the owners have chosen not to renew.Â
The good news: fans of Freddy’s can still enjoy its diverse wine selection, craft cocktails and small bites at its Highland Park location at 2251 Highland Ave S.
