8 new + coming soon businesses in Birmingham

It’s a new week in The Magic City, and that means a new roundup of businesses popping up across town. 

From a new local grocer in Fairfield to the return of some old favorites, here are eight businesses that should be on your radar.

1. Gary Avenue Market | Fairfield

For residents of the west Jefferson County city of Fairfield, grocery shopping just got a whole lot easier. The newly opened Gary Avenue Market officially celebrated its grand opening on Tuesday, June 2, bringing fresh groceries and a renewed sense of community to Fairfield’s historic downtown.

The Gary Avenue Market offers traditional grocery staples at affordable prices, plus a dedicated meat market featuring fresh-cut meats, one of the most requested additions from the community. It also features an eatery serving pizza, salads, ice cream and other grab-and-go options. 

2. STILL | Hoover

There’s a new botox studio in Hoover’s Brocks Gap neighborhood. Founded by Dr. Elizabeth Adams, MD, STILL specializes in neurotoxin only—instead of per-unit pricing and. additional services, STILL offers a flat rate and promises quick visits with walk-ins welcome.

3. Small Joy Bakes | Caldwell Mill

Small Joys Bakes—originally started as Small Joys Homemade—is a self-serve bakery stand in Birmingham that just opened this past weekend on June 5. Every Friday and Saturday while supplies last, you can shop yummy homemade goods like cinnamon rolls, banana chocolate chip muffins, buckeye brownies and more.

Plus, you can preorder full pans and other items every Monday night at 8PM.

4. The Shoppes at District 31 | Alabaster

Alabaster’s highly anticipated development, The Shoppes at District 31, is making visible progress as physical storefront signs officially begin to go up along US-31 and I-65. The city confirmed that the first round of commercial tenants is actively preparing to move into the newly constructed retail spaces.

This first phase is slated to feature up to 14 retailers and restaurants, according to city planning documents and verified tenant rosters, including high-profile national brands such as:

  • CAVA
  • Chipotle Mexican Grill
  • First Watch
  • Hollywood Feed
  • Nothing Bundt Cakes
  • Panera Bread
  • Tropical Smoothie Cafe
  • Aspen Dental

5. Talbots | The Summit

Talbots is coming back to The Summit, y’all! The womenswear retailer is opening a large, refreshed storefront measuring approximately 8,700 square feet.

The brick-and-mortar space will be situated between LOFT and the Woodhouse Day Spa. Upon opening, it will serve as the brand’s exclusive location in the Birmingham metro area and one of only six statewide.

6. White House Black Market | The Summit

White House Black Market is also planning its return to The Summit—the new store will occupy a 2,900-square-foot space near Talbots and LOFT. This location will mark its second retail store in Alabama and its only presence in the Birmingham market.

7. Ashley Furniture | Hoover

Ashley Furniture, located at 4535 Galleria Blvd., is welcoming shoppers to its newly refreshed retail space! The chain retail store will host a grand re-opening celebration on Saturday, June 13, complete with storewide discounts, family activities and substantial product giveaways.

Doors open at 10AM, and early attendance is highly encouraged—the first 25 guests in line will receive a guaranteed giveaway, and all attendees can enter a raffle for a chance to win big prizes.:

Food lovers can also enjoy the cuisine offered by a local hidden gem, El Gran Cafe Castillo. Located in the back-left corner of the furniture showroom, this beloved Mexican restaurant has built a cult following in the Birmingham metro area.

8. Barberito’s | Birmingham

The Alabama food scene is getting a fresh injection of Southwestern flavor. Barberitos, a fast-casual burrito brand known for its health-conscious customizable menu, has officially signed a five-unit franchise agreement to enter the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa markets.

Barberitos is an Athens, Georgia-based, fast-casual Southwestern grill centered around a “better burrito.” Founded in 2000, the chain offers a fully customizable menu of burritos, tacos, bowls and salads built to order with fresh ingredients.

Specific addresses and opening timelines for the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa storefronts have not yet been released.
