It’s a new week in The Magic City, and that means a new roundup of businesses popping up across town.
From a viral new soft serve spot in Homewood to a Texas-inspired BBQ joint in McCalla, here are seven businesses that should be on your radar. Plus, one business we’re saying farewell to.
Now Open
1. New Shoes | Homewood

Homewood has a brand new ice cream shop located right in the heart of downtown: New Shoes Soft Serve opened on Thursday, May 21. The shop made its debut at the Taste of Homewood in March, taking home 2nd place in the People’s Choice Awards for its tiny soft serve ice cream cone samples.
Soft flavors include mango, birthday cake, sour cherry, vanilla sweet cream and more.
- Location: 2856 18th St S Suite A, Homewood
- Hours: Noon-8PM everyday

2. Cala Coffee | Mountain Brook Village

Cala Coffee’s newest location is now open in Mountain Brook Village, and it has something to offer that is unlike the coffee shop’s other two locations.
The owners, husband-wife duo Josh and Melanie Cosio, announced in late 2025 that they would open a third location in the former location of Suite Dreams, a custom bedding and home decor store that closed its doors in 2024.
Mountain Brook Village’s Cala has everything that regulars have come to expect from its sister locations, including original roasts, tacos from Ladybird Tacos and pastries from Bandit Pâtisserie.
- Location: 2409 Montevallo Road
- Hours: Monday-Saturday 7AM-4PM, Sunday 8AM-4PM
3. Austin Whereabouts BBQ | McCalla

A new barbeque joint has opened in McCalla featuring Central Texas delicacies including slow cooked brisket and pork belly burnt ends. Called Austin Whereabouts BBQ, the new restaurant is located near UAB Medical West.
This new BBQ spot crushes it with authenticity and a Central Texas BBQ vibe by actually preparing and slicing the brisket and meats in front of their new found patrons. According to the staff, customers are lining up to enter 10-15 minutes before the establishment opens at 11AM.
- Location: 6530 Pocahontas Rd
- Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 11:00AM-8:00PM
4. M. Cory Fine Clothier | Mountain Brook

A Mountain Brook women’s clothing boutique is welcoming shoppers back into a recently-transformed space.
After closing its storefront earlier this year to undergo renovations, M. Cory has officially reopened its doors in the heart of Mountain Brook Village, debuting a thoughtfully redesigned interior and an enhanced shopping experience.
- Location: 2734 Cahaba Road, Mountain Brook
- Hours: Monday-Friday 10AM-5PM, Saturday 10AM-4PM, closed Sunday

The Edge, a multi-functional gathering space and outdoor food hall in Homewood, is welcoming a new ice cream shop, Scoop City.
Scoop City will be owned by Chef Nick Carpenter, owner of Tuff Love Hospitality, the company behind other restaurants such as The Que*Bicle in Homewood and Porky’s Pride Smokehouse in Warrior.
6. LoveShackFancy | The Summit

This will be LoveShackFancy’s first Alabama location and will be adding its signature romantic, feminine styles to your wardrobe and home. The 2,000-square-foot space will feature fashion, beauty, home and lifestyle pieces for girly girls.
Fun fact: It was founded by Rebecca Hessel Cohen, a former fashion and beauty editor at Cosmopolitan, according to the brand’s website.

7. Pickleball Kingdom | Homewood

Pickleball Kingdom, one of the fastest growing national indoor pickleball companies in the U.S., is opening its first Alabama location in Homewood on June 13th.
The new indoor 40,000 square foot pickleball spot will be located at the former Conn’s HomePlus store on Lakeshore Parkway. Pickleball Kingdom presently has over 40 locations and has awarded 400 franchises globally.
This is the third indoor Pickleball facility to open in the Birmingham Metro area in little over a year.

8. Nana Funks | Lakeview

Popular late-night club Nana Funks has ceased operations last weekend after two decades in Birmingham’s Lakeview district.
Founded in 2006, Nana Funks has been a mainstay of the Lakeview entertainment district for two decades. Located next to Innisfree Irish Pub in the Avon Place at 708 29th St S, Nana Funks has long been a popular late-night haunt for locals and visitors alike.
