Underwater Waterfalls—A Real Thing
Quick Q: How many natural lakes are in Alabama? Quick A: Zero. Of all the lakes this state has to offer, all were man-made. Follow our new three-part series exploring the history of Alabama’s rivers, why our river system is called “America’s Amazon”, and what threats and protections are going on at this very moment. Part one is up now.  In addition to the history lesson, you’re likely to see some things that you’ve never seen before. I know I did.

It’s Gonna Be May
With springtime comes farmer’s markets, and also Bham Now’s guide to them! It’s not too hard to find fresh produce these days, but we wanted to make it even easier for ya. See when your local markets are open for biz. Double points if you hit them all.

Mother’s Day 2017
We are T-minus 4 days until Mother’s Day, folks. Don’t have a gift yet?  Don’t fret. Books-A-Million has got you covered even if you have no idea what to get your lovely momma. From her favorite book genre to Willow Tree figurines and home decor, BAM! is seriously your one-stop shop for everything she loves. Oh, did I mention that you get 20% off with your Books-a-million club card?  Your momma didn’t raise any  dummy.

I Need a Hero…
…Doughnut. Thankfully, now we can find the treat in more than pop-up shops around the city, because they’re setting up shop in their own storefront. Homewood, say hello to Hero. Located in the former Homewood Musical Instruments building and with an expected open date of mid-late summer, you can expect this place to be hoppin’.

Loft Living
Need more lofts? Yes. Need more lofts in cool locations? Absolutely. Check out the new mixed-use project, North 24th Street Lofts, located between 1st and 2nd Aves N. The redevelopment of the old Bomb Shelter music venue will become 5 condos, complete with garages and open floor plans. I want.

Top Secret 007 Bureau Biz
One of my favorite stories from last week explains how in the world the FBI Citizen’s Academy works. It’s a nine-week program run by local FBI offices, of course with Birmingham being one. How to get in? It’s all about who you know. Can you guess which famous local has been through the program?

“Environment Schmenvironment.” -The State of Alabama
Alabama doesn’t support the Department of Environmental Management. That’s what Director Pat Byington said in a commentary we published following recent funding reports. Or rather, lack of funding reports. The ADEM got $280k last year from the state, down from $800k in previous years. Neighboring states environmental protection agencies get $10M+. M as in million. Y’all, we’re even way behind Mississippi.  Read the full piece here.

Taking the “pain” out of “campaign”
Keeping you updated on the local municipal election candidates.
