New jobs, big news for foodies + business events
Reading time: 5 minutes
I wish I’d gotten into the tiny pumpkin industry a long time ago. If I’d known they would be the centerpiece of every American’s coffee table as soon as the calendar turned to October 1, my stock would be skyrocketing right now. Get in on your own version of the miniature pumpkin venture when you hear what’s happening in Birmingham’s business world this week, including events and open jobs.

What’s pulling rank in the business world?
Dealing with a whole different animal 🏥
Actually, several different animals. UAB recently received a $9.3M grant to create the new Center for Precision Animal Modeling. Basically, it involves the process of recreating a specific patient’s experience with a disease using worms, fruit flies, zebrafish or rats. Scientists can study the effect of various treatments in the animal model, and can more accurately recommend the best treatments for the human patient. It’s kinda funny, who knew what could save us from becoming worm food is worms?
Wood you believe it? 🌳
Georgia-Pacific creates lumber in an environmentally conscious way—tree for yourself. In light of it being Manufacturing Month, it only made sense to take a closer look at the company whose products, which include Angel Soft, Aria and Brawn, are found in 65% of American households. The number would probably be higher, but we know there are one or two households out there who are still hoarding toilet paper.

Like bees to honey 🐝
That’s how easy Birmingham is attracting 23 new Venture for America fellows from around the country to our local startup scene. We chatted with six of the worker bees who are becoming part of the Magic City’s tech hive. We have no doubt their success here will be sweeter than honey.
Virtually, we’re here 💻
Mentally, I’m back in the year 2012, but in reality, we’re cheering on Birmingham startup Mixtroz as they present at Venture Atlanta’s virtual conference on October 21-22. Out of 400 applicants, the company was chosen to present at one of the nation’s largest annual venture investor conferences in the Southeast.
Do you hear that music? 🎻
Because we’re feeling fit as a fiddle! Magic City Wellness Center, the first LGBTQ comprehensive healthcare facility in Alabama, and UAB’s 1917 Clinic are two of Lakeview’s newest neighbors. Suddenly, that area of Birmingham has a healthy glow to it.
Deli-cious news 🍞
Ore Mercantile, Birmingham’s only micro-retailer, is sandwiching something new between clothing racks and expanding the store with the addition of a deli. It’s only one of the six openings that Birmingham has seen in the last week, including a new Wing Stop and steakhouse.
