6 new businesses + 2 closure in Birmingham this week

It’s a new week in The Magic City, and that means a new roundup of businesses popping up across town.
From a late night dining spot coming to Five Points to the return of some old faces, here are six businesses that should be on your radar. Plus, two businesses we’re saying farewell to.

1. Nmosa Fabrics | Woodlawn

If you’re looking for custom alterations, fashionable designs and one-of-a-kind fabrics, you don’t have to go farther than Nmosa Fabrics.
Located in Woodlawn, Nmosa Fabrics was founded by Theuda Tusajiwe, a longtime seamstress with a passion for fashion. Originally from a small Walker County town with a distinct lack of fashion stores, Tusajiwe grew up sewing custom outfits for herself and her friends; today, she shares her custom designs and fabrics—sourced from around with world—out of her storefront in Woodlawn.
After over five years at 5501 1st Avenue North, Nmosa Fabrics is moving a couple blocks down the road to 5528 1st Avenue North.

2. Top Dog | Homewood
A new boutique small-dog daycare is now open in Homewood, designed specifically to provide safe, open play for your pooch.
Top Dog Homewood, located at 2804 Crescent Avenue, opened in April as the second location of the doggy daycare company. Birmingham’s Top Dog location opened in 2021. Homewood’s new location specializes in small dogs exclusively, providing a safe environment for your furry friends that weigh 35 pounds or less.

3. Joseph’s Table | Pelham

Formerly located in Chelsea, this family-owned Mediterranean bistro and bar is moving into the North Pelham Square Shopping Center in the former McAlister’s Deli space and is now open for lunch.

4. The Dive Bar | Montevallo

The Dive Bar & Grill is back in Montevallo with a refreshed menu, new entertainment space and soft opening details. Owned by Brianna McClanahan and TJ Robertson, the restaurant first opened in Montevallo back in 2019 before relocating and merging into a family-friendly concept.
Now back in its original location on Main Street, the restaurant is serving up a flavorful mix of Cajun recipes and traditional American favorites like boudin and sirloin steak. The restaurant is currently hosting a soft opening Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11AM to 11PM.

5. Karma’s Kitchen | Five Points South

A new diner is coming to Birmingham’s Five Points South neighborhood this summer! Located between Ocean and Dobber’s Five Points Pub, the upcoming Karma’s Kitchen will offer late night fare, early morning bites and everything in-between.
Named after Dan’s daughter, Karma’s Kitchen has a simple goal: good food, fast service and prices people can afford.

6. NOIR Café | Hoover Public Library

Coffee and books in one spot? Birmingham bibliophiles, your new favorite hangout is almost here. NOIR, a new luxury café, celebrat
es its grand opening on Wednesday, June 10. The best part: it’s located inside the Hoover Public Library.
NOIR, a collaboration between Pauline’s Fine Cakes and Desserts and LaFleur Coffee Boutique, will offer specialty coffee drinks, curated brunch options and handcrafted pastries.

7. Red Lobster | Vestavia Hills

One of the Birmingham-area’s oldest seafood chain restaurants has closed after 54 years in operation—a note was posted last week on the front door of the Red Lobster Vestavia Hills location at 1030 Montgomery Highway, informing customers about the closure.
In 2024, five Red Lobster restaurants were closed throughout Alabama when the company filed for bankruptcy. The Vestavia location, which opened in 1972, was one of eight restaurants that survived the company’s restructuring plan.
8. Rocky Ridge Hardware | Vestavia Hills

Rocky Ridge Hardware, a fixture among local businesses in Vestavia Hills, announced its last day in operation will be Saturday, May 30. The local business, which has been owned by the Moran family since 2013, was started in the early ’80s, according to Dan Moran.
