Ampersandwich opens new downtown Birmingham location

Great news for fellow sandwich-lovers in the Magic City—Avondale’s popular Ampersandwich has officially opened a second location! Located in the former Zoe’s space at 1819 5th Ave N, Ampersandwich’s downtown location is perfect for downtown workers looking for a quick, tasty bite for breakfast or lunch.
What is Ampersandwich?
Founded in 2021 by Joe Phelps, owner of Pilcrow Cocktail Cellar, Ampersandwich is a popular neighborhood sandwich shop in the heart of Birmingham’s Avondale entertainment district. Known for its made-to-order sandwiches—made with fresh ingredients and bread from Birmingham Breadworks—Ampersandwich’s menu includes made-to-order classic and specialty subs, including:
- Italian Sub — Pepperoni, capicola, salami and provolone with mayo, whole grain mustard, giardiniera, onion, lettuce, tomato, pickle, oil, salt & pepper
- Hot Pastrami — Pastrami, Swiss and provolone with mayo, whole grain mustard, giardiniera, onion, lettuce, tomato, pickle, oil, salt & pepper
- Roast Beef — Roast beef, Swiss, pickled onion, arugula and horseradish mayo served with beef jus
- Spam Banh Mi — Fried spam, carrot, radish, jalapeno, cucumber, cilantro and mayonaise
As a longtime Ampersandwich fan, it’s hard to go wrong with any of its classic or specialty subs. I also love the sandwich shop’s chef salad—thin-sliced turkey and ham, Swiss, cheddar, shaved red onions, grape tomatoes and croutons on a bed of chopped Romaine lettuce.
Ampersandwich opens new location in downtown Birmingham
Earlier this year, Ampersandwich owner Joe Phelps announced plans to open a second location in the Birmingham market. Located in the former Zoe’s space in the One Federal Building at 1819 5th Ave N, Ampersandwich Downtown officially opened on Wednesday, September 9 and will be open from 7AM to 4PM, Monday through Friday.
In addition to the beloved sandwiches and salads from its Avondale location, Ampersandwich Downtown will feature a new breakfast menu with grab-and-go options designed for the busy schedules of downtown Birmingham workers. Standouts on the new breakfast menu include:
- The Big Bologna — Thick cut smoked bologna, egg, American cheese and dijonaise
- Sausage, Egg and Cheese — House-made breakfast sausage with dry herbs, red pepper, egg, white American cheese and pepper jam
- Big Breakfast Burrito — Your choice of meat, scrambled eggs, cheese, potato, onions, green peppers and pepper jam
In addition to its new breakfast menu, Ampersandwich Downtown plans to roll out catering options for downtown offices and businesses soon, with both breakfast and lunch options available.
