Want recommendations for what to eat in Birmingham in April? The Bham Now team is back with the best things we ate in March. Based on the amount of food we eat as a team, you could say we’re experts. Here are ten of the best dishes we tried, from sushi with strawberries to pizza with hot honey.

1. Chicken tortilla soup from Los Amigos

“I feel like Los Amigos is just the natural spot that everyone ends up in when they visit Lakeview, and it did not disappoint. This is the perfect soup to warm you up on a chilly night. I’m usually pretty critical of my tortilla soup but the avocado was super fresh and the presentation was gorgeous!! 10/10 would get again.”

2. Kale salad + pesto pizza from Slice Pizza

“That kale salad hits all the right notes, with the salty creamy goat cheese, the sweet butternut squash and dried cranberries and the crunch of the pecans. As amazing as the salad is, you can’t go to Slice and not have pizza.”

3. Punk Rock Roll from Rock ‘n Roll Sushi

Immediately added this to my foodie bucket list. (Summer Guffey / Bham Now)

“I tend to hyper-focus on a certain food and this month has been sushi. So, you can trust me when I say the Punk Rock Roll should be your go-to dish at Rock N Roll Sushi. The strawberries paired with the sweet-chili-ponzu dressing make for one of the most exiting flavor combos. I mean, who wants boring sushi?”

4. Bang bang quesadillas from Carrigan’s Public House

“Carrigan’s Bang Bang quesadillas were some of the best quesadillas I’ve had. It was savory with a nice amount of spiciness and the lime juice made it even better.”

I recently sat down with Zebbie Carney, owner and founder of Eugene’s Hot Chicken, and learned all about his story. Since then, I’ve made my way to Eugene’s several times this month—I can’t get enough! The jumbo tenders (heat level hot) are just hot enough for me to enjoy and still have a bit of spice. You can’t go wrong!”

6. Sausage + fennel pizza with hot honey from Slim’s Pizzeria

“This was my first time to eat at Slim’s and it lived up to every expectation. I dream of the hot honey pizza! The atmosphere is great and the staff was so friendly. Will definitely be back for that pizza soon.”

My wife Kathy and I are addicted to the Tostones—we have them every meal (don’t forget the tomato-garlic sauce!). This month, we tried the fish tacos which were scrumptious.
