New studies show that close relationships between elderly people and their family members reduce their chances of passing away within in the next 5 years, compared to those who were not close to their families.
If you’re thinking, “My grandparents have lots of friends, they’re fine,” you may be wrong. Apparently, friendships didn’t have an affect on life expectancy – only family relationships.
So give grandma a call on your lunch break today – she’ll appreciate it.
Attorney Randall Woodfin plans to run for Birmingham Mayor and will officially announce his candidacy on August 27th, one year before the mayoral election. Elected to the Birmingham Board of Education, Woodfin served as president from 2013 – 2015.

Hip-Hop artist Mac Miller will perform at Iron City on October 18th. The show will come a month from the release of his latest album, “The Divine Feminine”, set to drop September 16th. The album will feature singles “Dang!” feat. Anderson .Paak, and “We” feat. CeeLo Green.

Milton McGregor and Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford, announced this weekend that Victoryland casino will open September 13th with 500 electronic bingo machines.
Once the booming place to shop – and disco dance – Century Plaza has been vacant since 2009 suffering from the opening of newer, shinier malls like Hover’s Galleria. But now, a prospective buyer, New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church, might come to the rescue. The owner is seeking to sell for $7M and the deal is currently in review.

Ty says that all the companies moving on and close to 280 are building some sort of mini city centers. On the same page, down town is growing rapidly with development plans geared toward the massive open stadium and other luxury options.
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington, Birmingham residents will march from the A.G. Gaston Motel to Kelly Ingram Park on Sunday, August 28th at 6:00pm. The march hopes to garner support for legislation that would create a Civil Rights National Park in the city known most for its crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement.
There will also be a performance by soul artist, Ledisi, at Kelly Ingram Park.
