Carrigan’s moving to NEW development, The William, in 2025
Reading time: 5 minutes
Big news, Birmingham! Popular restaurant and cocktail bar Carrigan’s is leaving its home of 11 years and moving to an exciting, brand-new development in downtown Birmingham: The William.
Read on to learn more about The William and the new home for Carrigan’s in downtown Birmingham.
Meet The William, a new development coming to downtown Birmingham
Over the past decade, there have been several successful redevelopments of historic, vacant buildings in downtown Birmingham, such as:
Soon, we can add The William to that list.
A boutique mixed-use apartment building with 27 apartment units and retail on the ground floor, The William is a new development located at 1911 3rd Ave N, a historic five-story building constructed in 1905 as a furniture/department store.
“This area of downtown was the retail center of the city until the 70’s and 80’s. Those department stores are gone, but the infrastructure is still there and incredibly unique. Within two blocks, people can walk to theaters, gyms, salons, coffee shops, bars, restaurants, parks and more.”
David Carrigan, Clovenstone Real Estate Development
Leading the project is Clovenstone’s David Carrigan, a seasoned local developer and owner of Carrigan’s Philanthropub.
Carrigan has already renovated several historic buildings in downtown Birmingham—including the current home for Carrigan’s at 2430 Morris Ave.
Here’s what we know about The William
According to The William’s property manager, Karley Rae Johnson, The William will offer a new level of convenience, experience and personalized concierge service to its residents. While other apartment buildings contain countless residences, The William will offer only 27 studio apartment units in three different style—The Skylight, The Alley and The Avenue.
“The William is a smaller building with a smaller number of units, which allows us to give each resident more personalized attention. Residents at The William will be more than just a number.”
Karley Rae Johnson, Property Manager, The William
Part of that personalized attention includes a cleaning package; if residents choose, the building’s cleaning crew can do their laundry, tidy up their apartments and more.
The William’s centralized location in downtown Birmingham means residents are just a few blocks from attractions like:
- The Alabama and Lyric Theatres
- McWane Science Center
- The Pizitz Food Hall
- Railroad Park
- An ever-growing list of restaurants, coffee shops, bars and more
Plus, the team behind The William plans to coordinate with neighboring restaurants to host block parties in downtown Birmingham.
A new home for Carrigan’s Public House
More than just apartments, The William will include a street-facing retail space, an exclusive rooftop penthouse and bar—and the new home for Carrigan’s.
Although the new location will be smaller than Carrigan’s current home on Morris Avenue, the new home will retain the restaurant and bar’s iconic character and finishes—plus, the distinctive Land Rover back bar will be coming along, too.
Although guests can enter from 3rd Avenue North, Carrigan’s main entrance will be within the alley between 20th St and 19th St and between 2nd Ave N and 3rd Ave N.
Clovenstone Real Estate Development has worked extensively with the city, REV Birmingham and its neighbors to remove dumpsters, clean up the alley and add lighting.
“The most exciting highlight of the new location is that we are activating the alley and moving our large neon blade sign into the alley as well.
This particular alley is the most unique in the city because it retains almost all of the historical character of the city center: intact buildings, brick walls and metal fire escapes.
We are very excited to be Birmingham’s first downtown alley bar and hope that more entrepreneurs will join us and make the alley into something special for the city of Birmingham.”
David Carrigan, Clovenstone Real Estate Development
Carrigan’s regulars will be happy to learn that the restaurant and bar menus will largely remain the same—with an upgrade here or there. Plus, the restaurant will be open for lunch every day—big news for downtown!
The existing Carrigan’s space on Morris Avenue will operate through the end of the year. David Carrigan plans to have the new location open to the public before the end of January.
