With new restaurants, retail shops, events and more popping up every day, there’s never been a more exciting time to live in downtown Birmingham. Managed by Farris Properties, the Theatre Lofts offer residents easy access to some of the city’s most popular attractions, restaurants, retail shops and bars, including:

“The Theatre Lofts adds to an already vibrant 3rd Ave North corridor and gives people the opportunity to live closer to some of the best amenities our city has to offer. We believe the ground floor live/work units will attract a wide range of businesses, from the retail entrepreneur looking to take advantage of a storefront directly across the street from the Alabama Theatre to the work-from-home professional.”

The new Theatre Lofts are located in the heart of Birmingham’s Theatre District, and include two historic structures:

  • The Graves Building was constructed in 1912 and named for Captain William H. Graves, a prominent Birmingham lawyer and developer who founded the Graves Shale Brick Company.
  • The Roberts and Son Building was constructed in 1897 and was originally occupied by the Roberts & Son Printing and Binding Company, Birmingham’s first job printing company.

Over the years the two buildings were home to a number of retail businesses, but both have sat vacant since 2009. Now, the Theatre Lofts are breathing new life into the structures.

Fun Fact: Since both the buildings are contributing structures to the National Register for the Retail and Theater Historic District, many of the historic features have been maintained and restored. For instance, some units include old department store tile and terrazzo, tin ceiling tiles and exposed brick and wood columns. One two-story unit even features a historic staircase!

Since the Theatre Lofts are located in historic buildings, each of the 45 units are unique—featuring high ceilings and rustic, restored hardwood flooring. Despite the buildings’ age, each unit has been furnished with the latest energy-efficient appliances, including full-sized washer & dryer sets!

Fun Fact: Ten of the Theatre Lofts’ units will be “live/work” units where the resident can live directly above their street-facing storefront or workspace!

In the Theatre Lofts, there are several common spaces available to each resident, such as a fitness center, a resident lounge with a coffee bar as well as a rooftop leisure space featuring a unique view of the Birmingham skyline.
