Did you know that just about 15% of textiles are recycled nationally each year? That means about 11 million tons of clothing and fabric are thrown out. So, a lot of materials end up in landfills.

Earlier in the year, Sozo Trading Co. completely stopped using plastic bags. Now, Sozo is trying to upcycle, or transform old material into a new product.

Using grant money from a local foundation, Sozo is in shape to buy the equipment needed for the new upcycling program.

So what is Sozo’s plan?

The Sozo recycling plan includes reweaving fabric into new clothes. Sozo is hoping to turn fabrics into home insulation or carpet padding!

Fun fact: Polyester can be shredded and melted into “new” plastics.
