Won’t you be our neighbor?  🛍️

Mr. Rogers was right, it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood—at least in West Homewood. Local real estate development firm Shannon Waltchack is pulling a Taylor Swift on the area and contributing to West Homewood’s rebrand as “Westwood.” The team is putting together a $250K renovation of a well-known shopping center—we’re throwing on a cardigan and heading out.

Making MS go MIA 👏

No need to look to the magician on this case, we know who’s helping MS disappear. A legendary member of Birmingham’s community, Tom Spencer is rising to the challenge of creating a world free of MS. He raised over $7,500 for the National MS Society this year alone, which will benefit people living with MS and their families.

Everybody wants to be a cat 🐱

…Because a cat’s the only cat who knows where it’s at. 🎶 The Aristocats said it first and these Oak Mountain high school seniors are taking on a less literal meaning. In honor of his late father’s legacy, Peter Anella founded the Cool Cat Club with three of his friends. The charity delivers comfort care packages to cancer patients at Grandview Medical Center and helps provide financial support to them and their families. Find out how you can be a cool cat, too.

The park horse of Alabama

State parks are notoriously underdogs, but they always rise to the occasion to provide an unlimited amount of resources for all who visit. You can become a champion for our parks too by volunteering, joining organizations that benefit them and cheering on their success.

Cocktails, karate + ketchup

No, fortunately, these aren’t the names of a set of Kardashian triplets. They are, however, insight into the freshest new businesses opening in Birmingham. Downtown and Avondale will soon welcome New Moon cocktail bar, Ampersandwich Deli and Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu studio. First we burn calories, then we feast.

Leave it to Linda 🎼

You know classics like  “Night and Day,” “I Love Paris,” “In the Still of the Night” and “Love for Sale”—they were all composed by musician Cole Porter. While he gets all the credit, did you know his wife was his biggest inspiration behind the timeless hits? This time, Linda Lee Thomas is stepping into the spotlight. Watch her story unfold in “Love, Linda” at the Virginia Samford Theatre September 17-27.
