A visual look back on summer 2020 in Birmingham
Labor Day weekend is here, Bham. Summer is drawing to a close, and while we’re ready for some cool breezes to roll in, we’re sad to see our long summer days go. We rounded up 5 of our buzziest videos from this summer to relive as we bid the season adieu. Don’t miss out!
1. Rainbow Tunnel, but Make it Massive
Summer kicked off with a rainbow—underneath the 59/20 bridge. These stunning lights are part of the massive renovation project that involves ALDOT, CityWalk BHM and more.
2. Talk about Flower Power
This has to be one of the most stunning things to happen in Birmingham over the past few years. In June, 30+ local florists came together to create a floral memorial in front of the Rotary Trail sign.
The purpose of the memorial was “to remember those in our community who have been victims of racism… and to try to bring the community together to reflect, be inspired and learn from each other about how to move forward in a way that makes our city and state more just and more equal.”
3. A Truth You Can’t Ignore
The Black Lives Matter street mural by Railroad Park was a Herculean community effort to bring attention to racial injustice and pay tribute to our citizens who have experienced it.
The project was headed up by Birmingham artist Shawn Fitzwater of Fitz Signs. Shawn + community volunteers finished the mural in just two days—learn all about it here.
4. New on the Bham Brews Scene
Birmingham’s brewery scene is thriving, and people are taking note. Atlanta-based Monday Night Brewing Co. is coming to the Denham Building in Parkside.
We got a sneak peek at the new taproom, and it’s pretty fantastic.
5. A Birmingham Icon Returns
Towards the end of July, Birmingham had a few exciting new things popping up to celebrate. One of them was the iconic Michael’s restaurant opening in a new location.
We got an inside look at the rooftop space in Parkside, and it’s truly stunning.
