The Birmingham-based Housing Affordability Trust (HAT) approved $4.3 million in grants to nearly 40 organizations across Alabama. The 2026 funding round supports initiatives supporting:
- Affordable housing development
- Food security
- Clean water access
- Workforce development
- Family stabilization services
Funding affordable housing and community support in Alabama

HAT’s mission focuses on addressing multiple root causes of community instability. By funding a diverse mix of nonprofits, the trust aims to provide comprehensive support alongside transitional and permanent housing.
One recipient in this round of grants is Girls Inc. of Central Alabama, which provides academic support, mentorship and enrichment programs for young girls in the region.

Birmingham organization invests $35M in local housing initiatives
Founded in 2012 by the Jefferson County Housing Authority Board of Commissioners and Navigate Affordable Housing Partners, HAT has expanded its regional footprint significantly over the last decade.
This latest round brings the organization’s total community contributions to nearly $35 million since 2017.

Empowering Alabama communities through stable housing resources

This grant cycle builds on consecutive years of affordable housing developments spearheaded by HAT’s founding organizations in the Greater Birmingham area. Recent projects include:
- Woodlawn: A 2025 partnership between Navigate and Woodlawn United to construct high-quality, energy-efficient homes and the Cottages on Georgia Road
- Bessemer: A 2024 collaboration with the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation to bring new investments to the Northside neighborhood
- North Titusville: The award-winning “Live on 1st” modular home initiative designed to lower long-term utility costs for low-income residents
