Benefiting the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation (LCBF), the 17th annual Head Over Teal 5K, 10K and Family Fun Day is an active way to support women with gynecologic cancer and raise funds for life-saving research.

What to know about Head Over Teal 5K/10K + Fall Festival

The LCBF’s Head Over Teal race welcomes families of runners, walkers and supporters of all ages. Even dogs on leashes and kids in strollers can join the races.

  • Races begin at 8AM
• Where: The Preserve, 616 Preserve Parkway, Hoover, AL US 35226
• Cost:
  • 5K: $35
    • Price increases to $40 after Sept. 6
  • 10K: $40
  • Sleep in (t-shirt only): $30
  • GYN cancer survivors participate for FREE
• Register to run before prices increase on Sept. 6

Raise awareness + support women with gynecologic cancer

Head Over Teal presents an opportunity to play an active role in the LCBF’s mission of advancing early detection research, spreading awareness and education and supporting those affected by gynecologic cancer.

Four of the five GYN cancers do not have reliable early detection screenings, and symptoms are often subtle or easily attributed to other causes.

The LCBF encourages women to learn the signs and symptoms, listen to their bodies and advocate for their health when something doesn’t feel right.

Terri’s story

Terri McCollum is a familiar face at LCBF events who has experienced firsthand the importance of seeking medical advice when things feel off.

For five years, Terri has been battling ovarian cancer despite having a full hysterectomy done several years before her diagnosis. Her cancer is not curable, but she continues treatment while using her experience to encourage other women to advocate for their health.

Terri’s connection to the LCBF coincidentally began before she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

In 2020, she moved to The Preserve neighborhood in Hoover, where Head Over Teal happens every year. When she found out about the race and the mission behind it, she was excited to show her support.

“We participated and didn’t even know at the time that I had ovarian cancer, and so to find out later on and to see that there was already a support network in place…was amazing.”

Terri’s willingness to share her story and dedication to living her life to the fullest connects her with the mission of the LCBF—raising awareness and sharing a support system for those experiencing a GYN cancer diagnosis.

The Laura Crandall Brown Foundation’s impact

The Laura Crandall Brown Foundation started in 2009 after Laura Crandall Brown passed away from ovarian cancer at age 25. Her family and friends created the foundation in her name to honor her wishes of helping other women with a GYN cancer diagnosis.

Since its founding in 2009, the LCBF has:

• Awarded more than $800,000 to support ovarian cancer early detection research
• Educated tens of thousands of people about gynecologic cancer prevention, risk factors + symptoms
• Provided emotional, educational + direct financial support to thousands of gynecologic cancer patients, survivors + co-survivors
