The Together in Teal Butterfly Release is an opportunity for families to honor their loved ones who have battled ovarian cancer, educate people of the disease’s impact and find hope in a united community.

You can play a powerful role in the life-saving work of the NLOCF by attending the butterfly release.

Families can expect an uplifting afternoon of live music, vendors, educational presentations and a powerful display of more than 400 butterflies released over the beautiful Aldridge Gardens.

How the Norma Livingston Foundation is changing lives

September is gynecologic cancer awareness month, and the NLOCF is doing the work of educating people on the subtle, sometimes silent symptoms of ovarian cancer.

Around 21,000 women received an ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2025 according to The American Cancer Society. All proceeds from the butterfly release will go towards NLOCF’s advocacy work for these women—and many more—navigating such a tough diagnosis.

The NLOCF also supports the families of cancer patients, letting them know they are never alone.

Maddie’s story

We spoke to NLOCF spokesperson Chris McClendon who lost her daughter Maddie to ovarian cancer in May 2021.

McClendon says Maddie was a healthy college freshman before she received a shocking diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

While half of ovarian cancer patients are over age 60, the disease can affect women of any age.

While Maddie was in the hospital receiving treatments, the NLOCF sent flowers to her room, offering their support in a time of uncertainty.

The outreach from NLOCF left an impression on Maddie’s family and McClendon joined the organization, becoming a board member with the goal of preventing other mothers from going through what she had gone through.

The Norma Livingston Foundation takes women’s health seriously

The NLOCF was founded in 2004 after Lori Livingston lost her mother, Norma, to ovarian cancer. Like Maddie, Norma was diagnosed with late stage ovarian cancer, and treatments couldn’t reverse the damage done. Knowing the symptoms of ovarian cancer and advocating for your health are critical steps in catching the disease early.

The NLOCF encourages women to learn the symptoms and signs of ovarian cancer + speak to a doctor when things feel off.

Part of the goal of the butterfly release is to educate women of these symptoms and help them receive a life-saving diagnosis and treatment.
