The grocery store on wheels is making its way to 4 new Bham communities
Thanks to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) Live Healthsmart Alabama initiative, the Mobile Market is expanding its reach in the Birmingham area. Read more to see where exactly the Mobile Market (AKA the grocery store on wheels) is heading.
What’s the Mobile Market?
UAB’s program called Live HealthSmart partners with Birmingham leaders, nonprofits, and schools to improve the community health. The Mobile Market is a part of this program.
But, what exactly are they doing? The market is a food trailer that directly brings fresh food to the communities in need. And once a month, they provide a local chef who shows how to make these foods into healthy meals.
Moving into new communities
The mobile market is expanding to four more Bham communities. Check out the market at these new locations:
- Norwood
- Fountain Heights
- Tarrant
- Bessemer
“The Mobile Market provides fresh food to people who do not currently have access to a grocery store. And while it’s been successful in Kingston, Bush Hills, East Lake and Titusville, we didn’t want to limit our reach. Expanding to other food deserts gives more people more access to nutritious food, which down the line will create a greater impact on their health.”
Mona Found, M.D. Chef Executive Officer at Live HealthSmart Alabama
Shopping Smarter with the Mobile Market
Those that shop at the market will find some of the most affordable prices. They also use a point system called Double Buck. Basically, every dollar you spend, you earn a double buck that can be used on your next produce purchase.
That’s pretty rad-ish!
When can you go?
Every other week the Mobile Market will visit the new communities. Don’t forget to check out their evening market that will be held once a month.
Their next evening market will be in Tarrant on Thursday, August 26 from 5-7PM.
Check out their website so you don’t miss any of the markets.
