Sometimes I get wrapped up in my own problems, like whether the latest seasonal ice cream release from Big Spoon Creamery can possibly match the greatness of its predecessor. Then I remember, some people don’t have a Big Spoon within 2 miles of their house. That’s hardship. Now there’s hope for the greater Birmingham residents of Homewood. Yesterday, Big Spoon announced its third location, opening on Oxmoor Road in Edgewood by the end of 2018 or early 2019.

Location, Location, Location

Big Spoon knows how to pick a good location. The Edgewood area of Homewood is walkable, and what kid doesn’t want to walk or bike to the local ice cream shop? It’s also close to Gianmarco’s Restaurant, JoJo’s on Broadway, Sam’s Deli & Grill, bartaco (recently featured on Bham Now’s Taco Trail) and other Edgewood dining spots. Something tells me patrons of these establishments will soon be more mindful of saving room for dessert.

Of course, Big Spoon has been savvy about location since its beginning. They started in 2014 by traveling to the best locations to sell their trademark ice cream sammies from a tricycle cart. In 2016, they graduated to a food truck, which allowed them to serve artisan ice cream fans everywhere, from the Market at Pepper Place on Saturdays to the Summit in Cahaba Heights.

Next came the first storefront in MAKEbhm on 3rd Avenue South. Talk about a convenient dessert stop for customers of Saw’s Soul Kitchen, Post Office Pies and Melt in Avondale.

When Big Spoon expanded to the Warehouse District of Cullman in spring 2018, once again they chose a spot with lots of traffic in close proximity to other successful local business. In the 6,500-square-foot space at Mae’s Food Hall, Big Spoon’s artisan ice cream complements the fare at Link’s Hot Dogs & Hamburgers, I Love Bacon and Cantina Taqueria. (Not to mention Big E’s Arcade is there. The owners of Big Spoon know their target audience.)
