It’s a new week in the Magic City, and that means a new roundup of businesses popping up across town.

From a new farmstead shop opening in Homewood to a downtown coffee shop expanding to Hoover, here five upcoming openings that should be on your radar. Plus, two local businesses we’ll miss.

Now Open

1. Stone Hollow Farmstead | Homewood

In September 2025, a family farm with an outpost grocer and gift shop in Pepper Place—Stone Hollow Farmstead—opened its second Birmingham-area retail location in Homewood.

Now, a year later following a brief closure, Stone Hollow Farmstead has expanded its Homewood location with a fresh new look and plenty of new inventory just in time for fall. Inside, the Homewood store is full of fun and unique goodies.

For example, Smithey cast ironware—store staff told us this South Carolina-made cast iron is about as close to local as cast iron gets, and this shop is one of only two in Alabama that carry it.

2. Reformation | The Summit

The wait is almost over! Tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 6, Reformation is opening its first Alabama location at The Summit.

Reformation is known for its elevated, trendy women’s clothing and sustainable mission, creating garments from recycled fabrics and prioritizing natural fibers.

3. Wings R King | Pelham

The menu features a wide selection of wings and sauces, in addition to other bites like burgers, cheesesteaks and fish.

3. Sparrow Salon | Inverness

In early 2025, Sparrow Salon opened its first location at the former Ore Mercantile space in East Avondale. Now, nearly two years later, the salon has announced a second location—this time, located in the Inverness/Highway 280 area.

P.S. Know an experienced stylist looking to join a team? Sparrow is now hiring for the new location.

One of Birmingham’s favorite downtown coffee shops is expanding! Today, June Coffee announced plans to open a new location in Knox Square, a mixed-use community in Hoover’s Trace Crossings neighborhood.

Jimmy Truong announced the expansion on June Coffee’s social media on Friday, October 2, stating:

“As we approach the holiday season and end of 2026, we can’t help but already have our eyes set for 2027. We’re excited to announce that we’re opening our second location at Knox Square in Hoover. This project has been in the works for a long time and we can’t wait to share more updates with yall soon.”

Eight months after starting a fresh chapter under a new owner, beloved Birmingham seafood destination Ocean Restaurant has closed for good. Founded in 2002 by Chef George Reis, Ocean has long been one of Five Points South’s premier dining destinations.

Located at 1218 20th St S in Five Points South, Ocean has been a familiar name in Birmingham’s fine-dining scene for over two decades.

Eight months after an ownership transition, Ocean Restaurant has suddenly closed its doors. Owner Chloe Kidd confirmed the closure, but declined to share a statement by publication.

One of the last remaining retailers in the Birmingham neighborhood of Ensley is closing its doors for good at the end of October. Ideal Furniture—a historic, family-owned furniture store in downtown Ensley—announced that it will be ceasing operations on Saturday, October 31.

Located at 702 19th St Ensley, Ideal Furniture has operated under three generations of the Zivitz family for over eight decades. Originally created as a drugstore—Ideal Drugs—by founder Nathan Zivitz in 1943, the store transitioned from a pharmacy into a full-fledged furniture store under his tenure.

According to Mr. Zivitz, Ideal Furniture will be hosting a massive store closing sale, now through its final day on Saturday, October 31. Stay posted to Ideal Furniture’s Facebook page for updates.
