Twelve new building permits were issued for the Birmingham metro this past week for construction projects exceeding $1 million. These included six projects in Shelby County, two in Homewood, one in Clanton and three in Birmingham.

One of the Birmingham permits is for a Culinary Training Kitchen Incubator downtown, which will provide local culinary creators a space to build sustainable businesses.

What is the Culinary Training Kitchen Incubator?

The incubator is powered by Urban Impact’s INSPIRE program, which hosts an 8-week business development cohort for food-based entrepreneurs. Participants in the INSPIRE program receive operational readiness support, compliance education and preparation for commercial kitchen operations.

The facility will be located at the former Booker T. Washington Library site on Third Avenue North.

Designed to spark culinary entrepreneurship, the CTKI equips food‑based business owners with the space, tools, and support they need to grow. The facility will include:

  • Commercial‑grade gas and electric equipment
  • Fully equipped shared kitchen facilities
  • Hands‑on learning and training environments
  • Supportive resources for business development

A $1.4 million building permit was issued to Construction Works, Inc. for the project.
