A beloved bestselling author is heading back to his old Alabama stomping grounds to promote his upcoming book.

John Green, the number-one New York Times bestselling author behind “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Looking for Alaska,” has announced a nationwide book tour, and Birmingham secured the third stop on the itinerary, just after Toronto and New York City.

Green will appear Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 7PM at the historic Alabama Theatre this fall to celebrate his highly anticipated return to fiction.

Local independent bookstore Thank You Books is partnering to host the evening, ensuring Birmingham readers get a front-row seat to the celebration.

John Green’s deep roots in the Birmingham area

While Green currently resides in Indianapolis, his connection to the Magic City runs deep. During his early childhood, his family lived in Birmingham for a brief period before relocating to Florida.

However, his most formative connection to the area began at age 15, when he moved back to Alabama to attend Indian Springs School just outside of Birmingham. Green graduated from the preparatory school in 1995, and his time on the scenic campus directly inspired the setting of his debut novel, “Looking for Alaska.”

Indian Springs holds personal significance for the author as well. His wife, Sarah Urist Green (creator of “The Art Assignment”), attended the school at the same time, though the two did not officially become close friends until they reacquainted years later in the early 2000s.

What to expect from his new novel Hollywood Ending

The tour celebrates Green’s newest book, “Hollywood Ending,” which marks his return to young adult fiction.

The novel follows rising young actors Kai Laramie and Juniper Castillo after they are cast in a highly anticipated biopic titled “Andy Warhol Never Gets Old.” As the movie gains traction, their private lives are thrown into the chaotic spotlight of the modern attention economy. Written from dual points of view, the book explores the vulnerabilities of finding trust, love and a private sanctuary in a culture obsessed with celebrity.

How to get tickets for the Alabama Theatre event

Local fans can catch Green live downtown for an evening of conversation about the new book and his career. According to Thank You Books, John Green will be joined by a to-be-announced special guest.

Tickets are expected to move quickly given the author’s strong local following, so grab yours early to secure a spot at the historic downtown theater.
