Continental Bakery temporarily closes for feature film shoot

Continental Bakery temporarily adjusted its operating hours today as Birmingham continues to attract professional movie productions.
The beloved English Village staple took to Instagram to announce a brief closure from 7AM to 2PM on Monday, June 15, while a film crew shot scenes inside the bakery.
Regulars looking for their morning pastries were asked to hold tight for a few hours, but the bakery promised to reopen as early as possible on Monday afternoon. To make up for the disruption, the shop announced it would offer special deals on bread and pastries once doors reopened.
Details regarding the name of the film or the actors involved remain under wraps.
Movie crews keep flocking to Birmingham
This temporary closure highlights a larger trend of film crews choosing the Magic City as a backdrop.
Birmingham has experienced a notable surge in production activity in the last few years, driven by increased local support and dedicated creative funding.
In March 2026, film crews took over downtown Birmingham —complete with prop NYPD police cars — to shoot a project starring Alec Baldwin and comedian Jim Gaffigan. Sightings were reported along historic Morris Avenue and near popular spots like Prevail Union coffee shop.
The uptick in local filming follows an initiative from local leadership earlier this year. In January, the Birmingham City Council approved $160,000 in funding for Create Birmingham to actively recruit and support film and television productions in the region.
Additionally, the highly anticipated trailer for “The Rivals of Amziah King,” a feature film starring Matthew McConaughey and Kurt Russell that was shot extensively throughout the Birmingham metro area, debuted in May 2026.
