Commuters will need to completely bypass US-280 at Pump House Road in Mountain Brook starting Friday night, June 5. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will shut down the highway to install the final two bridge girders.

The major bridge replacement project is finishing several months ahead of schedule.

US-280 closure schedule starting June 5

Crews will close all lanes in both directions starting Friday, June 5 at 11PM. Here is how each side is affected:

  • Westbound lanes (toward downtown): Will remain completely closed all weekend, reopening by 6AM on Monday, June 8.
  • Eastbound lanes (toward Chelsea): Will close at night but reopen during the day on Saturday and Sunday from 5AM to 11PM.
  • Local closures: The eastbound Pump House Road off-ramp and Pump House Road itself will close during overnight hours.
    • Nighttime drivers will detour via Green Valley Road.

All lanes across the corridor will officially reopen before the morning rush hour at 6AM on Monday, June 8.

ALDOT expects severe delays and advises drivers to avoid the area entirely by using the interstate system:

  • Heading West: Take I-459 to I-65 North, exit at Lakeshore Parkway, and take it back to US 280.
  • Heading East: Take Lakeshore Parkway to I-65 South, transition to I-459, and reconnect with US 280.

What are the closures on US-280 for?

The installation of these structural beams allows the new bridge to accommodate a center turn lane and a new pedestrian sidewalk over the highway.

This is a critical piece of the ongoing project to widen US 280 to four lanes in each direction between Lakeshore Parkway and I-459, which is on track for full completion by early October.
