New 400-acre West Rock Mountain Preserve now open in Hueytown [Map]

Looking for something new and exciting to do this Memorial Day weekend? How about visiting Jefferson County’s newest nature preserve in Hueytown.

The much-anticipated 400-acre West Rock Mountain Preserve is now open to the public.

Located at 250 Dee Hendrix Road, the new park has much to offer folks seeking places to hike, bike and and enjoy nature.

New Hueytown preserve contains 6.7 miles of trail

Below is the just released West Rock Mountain Preserve trail map with a QR code featuring ways to access the West Rock Mountain’s 6.7 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails.

Several of the trails have already been named for visitors.

They include:

  • Tornado Alley
  • Gober’s Gorge
  • The Coal Chute
  • Hueytown “Hum” Dinger
  • Byron’s Pass
  • Mountain Top Trail

In addition to the trails, a scenic ridgeline has been named Ware’s Ridge, after Hueytown Mayor Steve Ware, a tireless champion of the project.

“The West Rock Mountain Nature  Preserve will give residents and visitors a place to connect with nature, enjoy the outdoors and take pride in land that is truly unique in West Jefferson County.”

Jefferson County’s 4th largest nature preserve

The preserve is a victory for outdoor enthusiasts and nature-lovers in Alabama’s most populated county. The new 400-acre West Rock Mountain Preserve greenspace makes it the 4th largest park in Jefferson County behind: 

One other big piece of news about the preserve, Hueytown has also announced plans to include horseback riding trails in 2027.

The official grand opening ceremony for the preserve is in the works.
