Popular Mexican dessert truck opening new location at The Pizitz Food Hall

La MoreliAna Bakery—the popular Birmingham-based food truck operated by Ana Araujo and her daughters, Joana and Marlen—is trading its wheels for a new brick & mortar location at The Pizitz Food Hall.
We spoke with Joana to learn more about the move + what customers can expect when they try La MoreliAna Bakery for the first time.
About La MoreliAna Bakery

According to Joana, La MoreliAna Bakery all started with her mom, Ana Araujo. After immigrating to the United States, Ana started baking Mexican bread pastries and selling them out of her car to make ends meet. Happy customers urged her to share her recipes online, and in 2014, she launched the Pasteles La MoreliAna YouTube channel, which now has 1.53 million subscribers.
“[Ana] grew a huge following of people from all over the world, and locals started commenting that they wanted to try the pastries in person. We couldn’t find anyone willing to give us a shot as a brick & mortar, so we decided to buy a food truck instead.”

The mother-daughter duo opened the Pasteles La MoreliAna food truck in 2022, and it quickly became a hit—popping up at major events like Taco Fest and Día de los Muertos. Those large community gatherings helped introduce thousands of people to La MoreliAna Bakery’s take on classic Mexican pastries.
“Two of our best sellers are our traditional tres leches cake and our churro cheesecake—a cream cheese-filled pastry topped with cinnamon and sugar. We’re very excited to start selling our pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) at our new physical location—we think people will love it!”

According to Joana Maldonado, La MoreliAna Bakery is hoping to open the doors to its new location at The Pizitz Food Hall in June.
