May is Preservation Month—2 Birmingham events for history buffs

Each year in May, local preservation groups and historical societies across the country celebrate Preservation Month. Here in the Magic City, we’re celebrating alongside the Birmingham Historical Society and other local orgs who keep the city’s rich history and culture at the forefront.

Keep reading for the importance of historic preservation, and a few events to add to your calendar this month.

May 10— Riding the Rails: Past + Present

James Lowery is an authority on the path of the Birmingham Mineral Railroadand has installed 199 signs to indicate the former roadbed. At “Riding the Rails,” he’ll share about the 100-year railroad that carried mineral resources to local blast furnaces and give insight into the signs installation.

May 14— Community Preservation spotlight in Titusville

Join the Titusville community and local leaders for a conversation on grassroots preservation efforts and the importance of maintaining the character and legacy of Birmingham’s neighborhoods.
