This summer, there are tons of fun new businesses popping up across town. From an exciting Nashville-based burger joint opening this week to the reopening of a historic Birmingham gem, here’s everything new and coming soon in The Magic City.

Plus, join us in saying farewell to a local restaurant we’re sad to lose.

1. Bin Depot | Bessemer

Ever wondered what happens to items returned to Amazon? A new store in Bessemer answers that question.

Thanks to a revolutionary retail concept, shoppers can buy top-brand items at a fraction of the cost. 

Bin Depot features a dynamic pricing model where prices start at $14 on Fridays and drop daily until they reach just 50¢ on Thursdays. You’ll be able to shop deals on a wide variety of products, including electronics, home goods, clothing and toys.

2. The Carver Theatre | Theatre District

After five years and an impressive floor-to-ceiling renovation, the Carver Performing Arts Theatre—home to the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame—is now officially open.

On Tuesday, August 6, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new exhibit inside the Carver Performing Arts Theatre. The new exhibit features information and memorabilia connected to a small selection of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame’s 200+ inductees.

3. The Edge | Homewood

highly-anticipated development in Homewood, The Edge, has begun a soft opening while the rest of its tenants prepare for the official grand opening.

While The Edge is still putting on the finishing touches, a few of its tenants are now open with limited hours:

  • Baba Java Coffee + Popbar: Monday-Wednesday 6:30AM-4PM | Thursday-Saturday 6:30AM-6PM
  • B’ham Burgers: 11AM-8PM Daily
  • Shin Ramen: 11AM-8PM Daily
  • The Que*Bicle: Monday 11AM-2PM | Wednesday-Friday 11AM-8PM | Saturday Noon-9PM | Sunday Noon-8PM

4. Joyland | Avondale

Joyland—a popular Nashville-based burger joint—is coming to Avondale in the former home of Rodney Scott’s.

Founder and James Beard Award-winning chef Sean Brock has teamed up with the owners of Pihakis Restaurant Group and Franklin, TN’s Southall Farm and Inn to bring Joyland to Birmingham this month.

5. Urban Hai | Parkside

Urban Hai, an Atlanta-based authentic Chinese restaurant, is opening in the Denham Building in Parkside later this year.

Founded in 2022 by restaurateur Gary Lin and Chef Hai Wang, Urban Hai is an authentic Chinese restaurant specializing in traditional dishes and Szechuan-style cuisine. They plan to open Urban Hai at the Denham Building by the end of the year.

6. Board in Birmingham | Highway 280

Birmingham will be getting its very first charcuterie restaurant this fall. Located on Highway 280 near Greystone, this exciting new concept is the brainchild of local caterer Corrine Sweet.

7. Workout Anytime Gym | Irondale

Workout Anytime is a 24-hour gym open seven days a week coming soon to Irondale.

It will offer:

  • Infrared sauna

8. Cantina | West Homewood

Cantina Tortilla Grill has closed in West Homewood.

In a statement released to Bham Now, the Castros thanked their loyal customers at Cantina. Now, they plan to pour all their energy into Sol Y Luna, their popular restaurant in Lane Parke near the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

We’re sad to see this beloved local restaurant say goodbye.
