A new, wider US-280 now open from Shades Creek to I-459
Reading time: 1 minute

The newly expanded US-280 between Shades Creek Parkway and I-459 is now open.
Presently, nearly 100,000 motorists travel daily on that particular section of 280. According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, the $53 million project, which began in May 2025, increases capacity on the vital roadway by one-third.
The contractor opened both directions of the upgraded US-280 between SR-149 and I-459 on the morning of Thursday, September 10.
Additional Highway 280 improvements from ALDOT

In addition to widening the travel lanes, ALDOT is also working on the following improvements:
- New, widened Pump House Road bridge
- Third left turn lane from US-280 west to I-459 south
- Third through lane on US-280 west across I-459
- Resurfacing from Rosedale Drive to Shades Creek Parkway (SR-149)
- New permanent signage

Most of the improvements are expected to be done by early October. The new Pump House Road bridge is expected to be finished later in the fall.
