Thanks to sponsors like Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, hundreds of thousands of people will be visiting Birmingham this July for The World Games 2022 (TWG 2022). For many, it’ll be their first taste of Southern hospitality. Thankfully, TWG 2022 volunteers will show off just how wonderful Birmingham, Alabama is. Read on to learn more about what makes these volunteers unique.
4,000+ TWG 2022 volunteers will introduce athletes + visitors to Birmingham
The countdown is on for The World Games 2022—in less than 30 days, thousands of international athletes and visitors will head to The Magic City to enjoy 10 days of sporting competitions and events. For many of these athletes, this will be their first time visiting Alabama, and even the United States!
That’s where TWG 2022 volunteers come in. Thousands of locals interviewed and went through hours of training to volunteer at The Games. Volunteer modules covered topics like:
- The history of The World Games
- Volunteer values of willingness
- Disability and inclusion
- How to spot human trafficking and help victims
- Culture and etiquette
- Diversity, equity and inclusion
Each module comes together to form a comprehensive training that will allow each volunteer to show off the hospitality and helpfulness we love in Birmingham.
“We want there to be a consistent experience with volunteers for every spectator and guest. We want them to have a fantastic experience and go away and say, ‘I want to come back to Birmingham’ or even, ‘I want to live in Birmingham.'”
Matt Gaines, Manager of Volunteer Services, The World Games 2022
5 volunteer values of willingness
TWG 2022 volunteers will be trained in five core values of willingness. All volunteers will:
- Serve
- Listen
- Respect
- Be solution-focused
- Be great teammates
“The quality level of these volunteers has just been off the charts. These are people who really want to do it for their city, people who want to do it for their country, people who want to do it for the sport.”
Matt Gaines, Manager of Volunteer Services, The World Games 2022
“Live Healthy, Play Global”
An event as impactful as The World Games 2022 is only possible with the help of generous sponsors like Blue Cross. Want to know exactly how Blue Cross had a hand in making the event possible? I’m glad you asked.
As the Education Program Sponsor, Blue Cross put together a fantastic FREE educational toolkit for teachers. The “Live Healthy, Play Global” initiative began in September 2021 and has been supporting Alabama teachers and beyond with math, science, social studies and physical education materials. It all goes hand-in-hand with Blue Cross’s mission to keep Alabamians active and engaged.
Birmingham is banding together to welcome our visitors to a city that’s innovative, active and inclusive, and what could be better than that?
