Junior League of Birmingham awards scholarship money to local women

It’s no secret that receiving a good education can change your life for the better. Now, thanks to the Junior League of Birmingham (JLB) and its academic scholarships, five local women will have financial assistance to meet their education goals. Keep reading to learn more about the JLB scholarships and meet the recipients who are already changing Birmingham for the better.

Members of the JLB make big moves in Birmingham

If you aren’t familiar with JLB, allow me to introduce you. This group of over 2,000 women are committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women as well as impacting the community. In 2022, the JLB is celebrating its centennial year—100 years of making an impact on The Magic City.

From volunteering time at community placements like Meals on Wheels to committing $1.25 million to One Place Metro Alabama Family Justice Center to acquire and remodel a permanent space for their operations, the JLB is a major part of improving Birmingham.

JLB scholarships are another way that the League makes a lasting impact on local women, whether they are JLB members or not.

“These scholarships really make an impact on the recipients financially. Some of these women would not be able to take as many classes without the scholarship or attend their university of choice. The JLB is an organization made up of women in the Birmingham area and we want to support deserving women in our area who are rising leaders. Women should take pride in their education and it is important for everyone to invest in their education.”

Meet the JLB scholarship recipients

Timberly Washington

Timberly is a non-traditional student currently seeking her medical degree at UAB. Her goal is to become an OB/GYN and physician in the rural community where she grew up. When she isn’t working hard to complete her degree, she volunteers at Children’s of Alabama and the Crisis Center for Rape Victims. What an inspiration and embodiment of the JLB’s mission!

Renee Whitcomb

Renee is another non-traditional student working on her undergraduate degree at Jefferson State Community College after 15 years of serving others. She’s worked at the Victim Assistance Unit and introduced the idea of using a facility dog to help those affected by violent crimes within Jefferson County.

“After 15 years of helping others, she finally wants to do something for herself and get a college degree. She is simply amazing and so deserving of our scholarship.”

Cherokee Wooler

Cherokee is a 2022 graduating Homewood High School senior who volunteers every week to serve children. Beyond volunteering, she started a dance camp for young kids in her community. She’ll continue her passion for serving children by seeking a medical degree to become a pediatrician.

Porsha Hicks

Porsha is a JLB member who will be using her scholarship to continue her education at Faulkner State University. There, she plans to become a professor to use her technology skills and almost 20 years of strong corporate background to guide and encourage women, especially minorities, to enter the workforce.

Madison Robertson

Madison is a 2022 graduating senior at Vestavia Hills High Schools with plans to attend the University of Alabama this fall for her degree in Nursing. To save money for her college tuition, she works a part-time job after school, so the JLB scholarship will help make her college education more affordable. When she isn’t at school or work, she volunteers at local nonprofits.
