If you haven’t been to Woodlawn in a while, it has been booming with new businesses including new restaurants, boutiques, and studios. Want to learn more about them? Here’s a guide to new local businesses in Woodlawn along with a few community staples.

Restaurants + diners

1. Bayles Restaurant and Catering

You have to check out Bayles Restaurant and Catering—a Woodlawn staple. Bayles officially opened in 2011 and their delicious short rib grilled cheese, omelettes and classic BLT sandwiches quickly gained the eatery a fanbase. Not only can you get a fulfilling breakfast, but you can book a catering service with some awesome soul food.

2. Lehman’s Pizzeria

Lehman’s Pizzeria is Woodlawn’s newest spot to get affordable pizza. They also offer pastas, salad, desserts and vegan options including their signature cauliflower crust. I recommend trying their “Mama’s banana pudding”—you won’t regret it.

3. Naughty but Nice Kettle Corn Co.

Woodlawn’s sweet treat shop, Naughty But Nice Kettle Corn Co. (NBNKC) is one of my personal favorites. NBNKC has a wide variety of hand-crafted, uniquely-flavored popcorn that you can pick up in store or have delivered. Their kettle corn is available in several sizes that include:

  • More

I recommend trying their Cheddar Makes It Better flavor—it’s dee-lish.

4. Urbano Taco Bar

Tacos aren’t only reserved for Tuesdays. Urbano Taco Bar has tacos that you’re going to want to eat everyday of the week. If you’re not much of a taco fan, don’t worry. They also offer burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, sandwiches and more that are just as good.

5. Nmosa Fabrics

Another new spot in Woodlawn is Nmosa Fabrics. Nmosa Fabrics is a boutique that offers alterations, custom design, and fabrics. They have all dressmaker fabrics and have a workshop set up for sewing and upholstery classes that will be starting soon.

6. The Wood

The Wood is Woodlawn’s vintage clothing boutique and skate shop. The Wood is all about supporting locals and being involved in the community and this shop was opened in hopes to provide a physical shopping space to sell vintage products and skateboards. Their inventory also includes vintage shirts, branded hats, and sneakers.

7. Morgan’s Closet

Located inside Nmosa Fabrics, Morgan’s Closet is a local nonprofit boutique that provides new and gently used business/professional clothing for women from all walks of life. You can shop as well as donate clothing that you no longer wear. Morgan’s Closet accepts:

Previously located in the historic A.G. Gaston Building on Fifth Avenue North, Ursula Smith Dance Company is a performing arts studio where young dancers can get proper training, gain confidence in their abilities and learn discipline in all areas of life.

10. Tryna B Studios

Tryna B Studios is the first Latina-owned studio in the Woodlawn area. The studio sells unique, upcycled vintage clothing—everything is one of a kind. It also doubles as a creative work space that you can book hourly. You have to check out Tryna B Studios on Instagram for dope new fashion pieces.

11. Suite 5305 Business Center

Business owners, you don’t want to miss this one. Suite 5305 Business Center is a newly-opened space for Woodlawn entrepreneurs to host meetings, workshops, network and so much more.

12. Woodlawn Bar and Lounge

If you haven’t heard, a new bar and lounge made its way to the area. Woodlawn Bar and Lounge opened this past January and is making a big buzz around the city. The bar serves wines, liquor, cocktails and some of your favorite beers. If you’re going to happy hour from 5-8PM on Tuesdays and Thursday, I suggest ordering their signature drink The Wood.

Located inside Holiday Inn Birmingham near the airport, Steel City Bar and Grill is the spot to wine down while waiting on your flight. They offer beer, wine, and cocktails—you can even get a soda with a bite to eat with your kiddos. Their southern hospitality and burgers seem to be a fan favorite.
