The Macy’s at Brookwood Village will be closing its doors after 48 years at the same location.

The space was originally occupied by Rich’s Department Store, which became Macy’s in 2005.

According to the BBJ, a clearance sale will begin in January and last approximately eight to 12 weeks at Brookwood Village.  The Macy’s at Riverchase Galleria will remain open.

As reported in Bham Now this week, only three establishments remained after LensCrafters closed its doors on December 31st. With Macy’s departure, only Hickory Tavern and Five Guys remain.

This past September, as reported in Bham Now, the Macy’s portion of the mall was acquired by Brookwood Office Partners, LLC, a partnership organized by Joe Sandner, IV president of Colliers | Alabama. Earlier in the year, most of the buildings within the Brookwood Village footprint were bought for $21 million by Fairway Investments.

Local Response

Even though Macy’s closure was not a surprise, local officials from Homewood and Mountain Brook are ready to work with the new owners of the Brookwood Village properties.

“The closing of Macy’s is certainly a sad situation, but with the recent purchase of the entire Brookwood property, I believe this was inevitable,” Homewood Mayor Patrick McClusky wrote in a text to Bham Now. “Both Homewood and Mountain Brook look forward to seeing what the new owners plan to do with the properties.”

What’s Next

Back in September, Sims Garrison of Fairway Investments told Bham Now, “Bringing the pieces together is paramount to helping Brookwood Village reach its full potential.”

Now that the fate of Macy’s has been determined, 2022 looks like the year we will find out “what’s next” for one of Alabama’s oldest malls.
