When you spend most of your time at work, it’s important that you love the people you work with. For the employees at La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries of Birmingham, going to work every day feels like spending time with family. Meet Steve Fendley, the General Manager of La-Z-Boy, who’s been enhancing comfort in the furniture biz for 37 years.

Get to know Steve Fendley

Working in the furniture business has always been a part of Steve’s life. His family had a furniture business in Oneonta and when he moved to Birmingham, he decided to bring his experience to La-Z-Boy.

“I was born into furniture. My family had a small business in Oneonta, Alabama that’s been there close to a century. I left and came to Birmingham about 40 years ago and was given a chance to work at La-Z-Boy.”

As the General Manager at La-Z-Boy, Steve makes sure his team members are taken care of. From coaching them in their roles as salespeople to supporting them through the ups and downs of every day, Steve wants everyone to feel like a family member—the same way he feels when he thinks of work.

“Every day is a challenge. And I think that’s one of the reasons I enjoy the business. Keeping my people energized and coaching them is huge.

One of our goals here is to make every customer not only a friend but a customer for life.”

Steve isn’t the only one who feels that way. About 40% of their staff has been with them for over 20 years. That isn’t common with any business, and it’s a testament to how the staff at La-Z-Boy treats each other. Curt Morris, the owner of La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries of Birmingham, cares about everyone who walks through the door—from employees coming into work to shoppers looking to furnish their homes.

“I think our company is different because how I feel about them—I care.

We are independently owned. Our owner cares, so therefore the manager cares.”
