For many young adults, heading off to college is their first taste of independence. For the first time in their life they have no curfew, no restrictions on how they spend their time and much more. But at the same time, these freedoms come with increased personal responsibilities, including taking charge of their own health.

In order to help their students lead healthy lives, Highlands College teamed up with TrustCare Health to provide easy checkups, walk-in urgent care and more. Keep reading to find out how it works!

A Healthy Partnership

Highlands College is a biblical higher education institution founded by members of the Church of the Highlands. The college, which is affiliated with Southeastern University, focuses on 4 areas of education:

  • Academic Instruction
  • Ministry Training
  • Character Formation
  • Spiritual Development

In order to provide the best healthcare possible to their students, Highlands College teamed up with TrustCare Health. In fact, the Mississippi-based chain of health care clinics currently operates three clinics in the Birmingham area:

  • Vestavia Hills: 708 Montgomery Highway, Suite 100, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216
  • Montclair: 1337 Montclair Road, Birmingham, AL 35210
  • Cahaba Heights: 3965 Crosshaven Drive, Birmingham, AL 35243

So, starting in the 2021-2022 school year, any student at Highlands College can travel to one of TrustCare Health’s Birmingham-area locations for regular check-ups, walk-in urgent care and much more.

In order to learn more about the partnership, we sat down with Blaine Lindsey, the Executive Vice President of Communications and Marketing for Highlands College.

How did Highlands College hear about the opportunity to partner with TrustCare?

Blaine: “Because of our role in the community, we are blessed with a strong network of supporters who are passionate about our vision and are constantly advocating for what we are building. One of those important relationships introduced us to TrustCare as a potential partner in that work. Our partnership with TrustCare was piloted in the spring of this year, and following its success, we have extended that into this fall semester.

How does the partnership with Trustcare help Highlands College students take charge of their health?

Blaine: “One of the things that’s most compelling about our structure with TrustCare is that our students have unprecedented access to quality, affordable health care seven days per week. Many of our student’s medical needs are facilitated by a HIPAA certified digital health app on their smartphone that puts them to direct contact TrustCare’s medical team. The students use the app for both texting and tele health with TrustCare. When an office visit is required, our students receive priority access with minimal wait times. TrustCare makes the same level of service available to our students without insurance for a low, flat rate.”

What is the main benefit of the partnership with TrustCare?

Blaine: “A clear benefit is the access to affordable healthcare for all of our full-time students, regardless of their insured status. That’s an opportunity that’s more commonly seen at larger, four-year institutions with on-site health clinics. Our students have taken full advantage of the access.

For us, though, the higher value is the opportunity for our students to build healthy habits that are important now, but absolutely essential for the lives of service and leadership they will pursue after graduation. That kind of practical preparation is a hallmark of our model at Highlands College, and we’re grateful to TrustCare for making it possible to extend that vision to include our student’s healthcare.
