When it comes to startups, technology, innovation and new ideas, Birmingham has been setting the standard as of late. Birmingham’s startup community is on the rise, and Techstars is part of that boom. Today, the global organization announced its inaugural class of participating startups in the 2020 Techstars Alabama EnergyTech Accelerator—let’s learn more!
What is Techstars?
Founded in 2006, Techstars is a seed accelerator from Boulder, Colorado. Back in October 2019, state business leaders, Alabama Power and Techstars joined forces and announced a new project—the Techstars Alabama EnergyTech Accelerator. Its objective? Attract startups from around the world right back here to Birmingham.
The Techstars Alabama EnergyTech Accelerator will focus on innovations in energy technology. They are supported by the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA) and the Alabama Department of Commerce.
Now, Techstars is ready to take the next step—and they just announced the first ten startups teams for the 2020 Techstars Alabama EnergyTech Accelerator.
Meet the Startup Talent at Techstars
Over the next 13 weeks, the chosen teams will be hard at work building Alabama’s next great tech startups. Throughout the accelerator, the participating startups will receive unmatched mentorship from startup founders, corporate and community leaders, and other leaders in the industry.
Ashipa Electric
Ashipa Electric is an energy company focused on developing power-generating assets and delivering reliable and resilient power to their clients. Specifically, Ashipa Electric aims to unlock the economic potential of cities across Africa by providing power to underserved communities.
EnergyHawk
Using satellite imagery, EnergyHawk’s software scours for the largest and most energy intensive facilities in North America. Then, using industry specific PowerTrends, Rooftop AI, and automated analysis of each facility and local characteristics, EnergyHawk can provide an Energy Assessment for over 1,000,000 facilities. Finally, EnergyHawk’s customers can use the Energy Assessment tool to quickly identify a worksite that best fits their needs.
Project Canary
Ever heard the old saying, “canary in a coal mine?” In old mining projects, miners would bring along a canary to use as an early warning sign against toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide. Well Project Canary is just like that—but on a much bigger scale.
Project Canary’s mission is to reduce the release of methane into the atmosphere. Using their own sensors, their goal is to continuously monitor thousands of remote sites and help energy companies reduce fugitive gas emissions.
Resillient Power

Resilient Power Systems started as a team working on ARPA-e projects for the U.S. Dept of Energy and is a leading provider of innovative energy solutions to electric utilities and their customers. Now, the team is addressing grid upgrades necessary for the transition to electric vehicles.
con.doit
Con.doit is electrical system mapping and circuit analysis software that walks you through the careful collection and analysis of electrical system data. With just an iPad or Android tablet and a bluetooth-connected infrared camera, Con.doit works with you, walking a technician or team of technicians through the collection of all of the relevant details of an electrical system, from beginning to end.
Sync Energy
Sync Energy is developing AI-based predictive software that streamlines planning and operations for electrical utilities, especially during emergencies.
Elektrik

TruSpin Nanomaterial Innovation
