Anyone else in need of a little pick-me-up? Here’s how the Bham Now team is surviving (and possibly thriving) after two weeks of social distancing in Birmingham.

The Scoop on Social Distancing

If you’ve been on social media or watching the news recently, you’ve probably seen the term “social distancing”. The term simply refers to the act of increasing physical space between people to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Examples of “social distancing” include working from home, canceling events and mass gatherings, and staying six feet away from others when possible. The video above is a good visual example of how a single person choosing to practice social distancing can help flatten the curve.

Surviving Social Distancing: Bham Now Edition

Obviously, our team is incredibly privileged to be able to work remotely during this uncertain and scary time. We know not everyone has that option, and we are incredibly grateful to all of the first responders, nurses, volunteers and more who are continuing to go out and help others despite the dangers and risks they’re facing at this time.

Things are heavy. And we know we could all use a pick-me-up right now. Here are the things helping Bham Nowers survive social distancing. We hope you can, at the very least, get a laugh or a few ideas from our responses.

“Well, we are on week three and I’m only slightly losing my mind. The days are running together, and I’m wearing my weekend overalls on Monday. Send help.

But seriously, I’m trying to find perspective every day and remember how lucky I am to be working from home and to be healthy.

P.S. I did not finish that macrame wall hanger I mentioned last week. The third week’s the charm, right?”

“I’ve moved things to the outdoors. I know…groundbreaking. Some days are harder than others, but it’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one going a little bonkers. After all, feelings are just visitors. They always come and go.

My essentials still remain the same: coffee, water, Spotify. I’ve planted a few herbs which is something I’ve always wanted to do but kept putting off. Stay tuned to see how that goes!

“We took a long walk through Roebuck Springs this weekend. We saw wisteria, azaleas, rhododendrons and dogwoods blooming. Gardens are growing and parents were out walking with their children.

We came across a stuffed animal scavenger hunt (pictures only – no touching) set up by a group of Moms from the neighborhood.”

“Well I’ve been spending a whole lot of time in my apartment of course, which tends to mean I get obsessed with new projects.

This weekend I took inventory of every piece of wall decor I have (it’s honestly way too much), sorted it by color scheme, took measurements, and made to-scale gallery wall outlines in Photoshop, complete with uploaded photos so I could see it all together.

I’m moving apartments if we ever make it out of this, and now I have all my decor sorted by room. Some may call this ‘a sign I’m losing grip on reality.’ I call it ‘a fun weekend project.’

Also I got brunch from Unos Tacos on Sunday and it was debatably the best food I’ve had in a month. Stay tuned for a guide to curbside Mexican food coming later this week.”

“Things are going well.  As you can see at least one cat doesn’t mind being part of an exercise routine.”

“I’d like to give a special shoutout to the friendly folks at Rojo who I’ve eaten takeout from 3 times in the past week. The beautiful spring days are also keeping me sane.

Despite these hard times, everyone in my neighborhood seems so upbeat and even though we can’t get anywhere close to each other, seeing friendly smiles across the street goes such a long way.”

Gabi | Account Executive

“Well, I watched Tiger King (in its entirety) in one day if that tells you anything…

Seriously though, while I’m missing social interaction and ‘normalcy’ more than ever, I’m also taking a lot of time to reflect and feel gratitude.

P.S. Luna and Apollo are def ready to get rid of us.”

“Everything’s going well. I miss the team! But it’s a beautiful day outside and that’s something to be thankful for.”

Jacob | Content Producer

“I’m on day 1 of being quarantine after stepping out of the house now. I felt my body getting weak so I did my best doing workouts with my dog and cat. 🐾”

We’re all in this together, Birmingham.

Stay safe and up to date out there, and let us know how you’re surviving social distancing on our Instagram, Facebook or Twitter!
