Magic City Brewfest is an event hosted by Free the Hops that showcases the very best work that craft brewers can whip up. Each year, guests get to try more than 150 of the best beers from across the state, including the award-winning brews from right here in Birmingham. In the past, these included specialty and cask ales–those rare brews that are almost impossible to find on the market.

Founded in 2004, Free the Hops is a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to bringing high-quality beers to Alabama. Through their activism and efforts, Alabamians have gained several beer-related rights in the past few years.

  • In 2009, Free the Hops advocated for legislation such as the Gourmet Beer Bill, which legalized beer with an ABV above 6% in Alabama.
  • Then, in 2011, Free the Hops supported the Brewery Modernization Act, which legalized brewery and distillery tasting rooms in Alabama.

In addition to Magic City Brewfest, Free the Hops also hosts the annual Rocket City Brewfest in Huntsville.
