A North Alabama specialty, “Alabama White Sauce” was first made famous at Big Bob Gibson’s Bar-B-Q in Decatur.  Miss Myra’s introduced the sauce to the Birmingham community in 1984. Since then, white sauce on barbecue  has become a staple, not only at Miss Myra’s, but at other BBQ  joints around the Magic City, including SAWS and Jim N Nicks.

Here is how Far & Wide described the sauce that makes the sandwich the “best” in the state.

“Located in the heart of barbecue country, Alabama is known for its whole smoked chickens and its unique white barbecue sauce. While there are dozens of recipes for this mayo-based concoction, the best place to sample it is where it all began, at Big Bob Gibson’s Bar-B-Q in Decatur.

“A handful of places in Birmingham also make a great version of this classic Northern Alabama sandwich, including our top pick: Miss Myra’s Pit Bar B-Q.”

Want to make your own Alabama White Sauce?  Miss Myra’s has shared their recipe numerous times in publications throughout the years.

It really is quite simple.

Acquire the following ingredients:

2 quarts heavy-duty mayonnaise ( the kind purchased at Costco’s or Sam’s)
1 quart white vinegar
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons pepper
Slowly pour vinegar into mayonnaise, using a whisk to work out all the lumps. While whisking in vinegar, also mix in salt and pepper. Once all the lumps are gone, place mixture in refrigerator before serving to allow sauce to thicken.
