Have you checked out West Homewood recently? Well, I hadn’t in a long time and was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled into the cute area around Patriot Park. A quick walk around the block of darling little bungalows, businesses and restaurants had me dialin’ up my realtor and planning my next family move. Here are the highlights of my adventure.

7 Places to Check Out in West Homewood

1. Seeds Coffee Company

Seeds Coffee Company is a local coffee company with a HUGE following in Birmingham. The nonprofit coffee shop serves up some of the areas best coffee, all while giving back to our community and coffee farmers beyond our borders.

The Homewood shop is located in a former gas station, with outdoor seating located where the gas pumps once sat. The outdoor area is kid friendly (it’s open and mostly fenced in) and the perfect spot to caffeinate yourself with kids in tow!

Patriot Park in West Homewood

Nestled in the center of West Homewood’s quaint little village sits the newly remodeled Patriot Park. Located of corner of Oak Grove Road and Raleigh Avenue, the park has everything you need for a fun day at the park with kids. There’s a walking track, a playground (with swings!), covered pavilions with picnic tables, clean bathrooms and plenty of shade!

The park is also wheelchair friendly. Once the kids are pooped, head across the street to Ash restaurant, Magic City Ice or Seeds Coffee for a little snacky snack.

Ash Restaurant

Ash is one of those cozy but chic neighborhood restaurants that make you feel welcome if you’re dressed to the nines, but also when you arrive in hole-y athleisure wear with two kids hanging off your legs 🙋‍♀️.

The southern inspired American restaurant opened across from Patriot Park last summer by former Bottega Cafe and Brick & Tin Chef Mark Driskill. Crowd favorites from the Ash menu include the fried green tomatoes, BBQ chicken and grits and spring farro salad.

The New West Homewood Community Pool

Have you seen the new aquatic center with a pool, splash pad, and slide in West Homewood? I stopped by as crews were putting the finishing touches on the $7.5 million dollar project. It’s absolutely beautiful! The new pool was built to take pressure off of the often overcrowded Homewood Community Center pool. It will open to members of the Homewood community for the first time memorial day weekend.

The pool is members-only facility for residents of Homewood. If you aren’t a member or don’t live in Homewood, find a friend that’s a member. Each member is allowed 1 guest per day. It is such a gorgeous facility!

Magic City Sweet Ice

After your dip in the pool with your Homewood buddies, head over to Magic City Ice to cool off. The dessert cafe serves artisan Italian ices, gelato, pastries and custards. Best of all, all of their ingredients are locally sourced.

Magic City Sweet Ice also serves made-to-order all natural craft sodas and hot or iced coffee drinks. They also have a full-service espresso bar if you’re needing an afternoon pick-me-up.

The shop will close for two weeks this month and undergo renovations. They’ll re-open just in time for summer!

Every Tuesday night in June and July, West Homewood will host an evening farmers market from 5 to 8 PM. The market will have food trucks, local farm vendors, arts & crafts for sale and live music.

Pizzeria GM

Pizzeria GM is the doughy brainchild of Italian restaurant Gianmarco’s owner Giani Respinto. Like most restaurants nearby, it has a casual neighborhood vibe. Much like its sister restaurant, the food here does not disappoint. They’ve got it all at Pizzeria GM—the menu boasts a wide selection of small plates, salads, sandwiches, pizza and pasta.

Mom-hack: while at the park, call in a to-go order and have a pizza picnic at the park. Take that, McDonalds!
