In Alabama, only 26.5 percent of individuals working in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields are women. So, Innovate Birmingham, a local workforce development program that prepares young talent for IT jobs is trying to change that—starting with InnovateHER.
Creating the Conversation
At the beginning of March, Innovate Birmingham launched the #InnovateHER social media campaign. They wanted to recognize women on their staff, in their boot camps, and in their alumni network who are contributing to a more representative primary to the tech workforce.
The InnovateHER upcoming panel discussion is hosted by Innovate Birmingham in celebration of Women’s History Month. It will focus on the direction of girls and women in the current tech education to the workforce pipeline. Their purpose?
- To advance women and girls interested in pursuing a career in technology
- To understand the current landscape for women in IT
- And to discuss strategies on how to effectively attract more women to STEAM
The panel will consist of women that are placed on various areas along the pipeline. They will speak on their experiences and provide valuable insight into what it is like working in the tech ecosystem.
Panelists will include:
- Robin Hunt: Data Analyst and founding partner at Think Data Solutions
- Amber Pope: Regional Manager of TEALS
- Nicole Mubarak: Software Engineer, Web Development Instructor, and Chairwoman of Birmingham Women in Tech
- Dr. Adrienne Starks: Geneticist and founder of STREAM Innovations, Inc.
- Tracee McCorvey – Director of Enterprise Systems Analysis at Protective Life
- Britney Summerville: Vice President of Community Engagement at Shipt
“The purpose of InnovateHer isn’t to grieve the statistics, but to take an objective look our K – 12 to workforce pipeline, and have candid brainstorming on how we can best attract, retain, and support girls interested in tech and women currently working in tech. No one is better suited to contribute to that conversation than women on our panel. Each of whom is actively contributing to creating a navigable and sustainable pipeline in our city—from primary school to entrepreneurship.”

Who is Innovate Birmingham?
Innovate Birmingham is led by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). They offer IT training programs to establish a sustainable pipeline of talent with the goal of creating skilled tech talent for local employers, as well as a fully funded education and training to people seeking to upskill and acquire a career in the tech industry.
Their goal is to solve two problems with a unified approach:
- Meet the demand of an IT workforce growing at the second-fastest pace in the country.
- Harness the potential of under and unemployed youth in the Greater Birmingham area.
