The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama was founded in 1982 by a small group of volunteers working alongside the United Way of Central Alabama and the Greater Birmingham Foundation. While the organization focused on feeding neighbors in need of emergency food in its early days, today the Community Food Bank supplies millions of meals per year to 230+ Partner Agencies—food pantries, shelters and children’s programs—in 12 counties across central Alabama.

Since 2003, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama has operated out of a small facility at 107 Walter Davis Dr. in Birmingham. Due to the current building’s size and limited food storage capacity, the organization acquired a 9.78-acre site just off Lakeshore Parkway in 2024.

Located at 4336 Turin Dr. in Bessemer, the nonprofit’s new distribution facility has over 72,000 square feet of space with expanded refrigeration/freezer capacity, more space for parking and deliveries as well as multiple drive-up bays and loading areas for donations.

The Lakeshore Drive-facing facade of the new facility is covered wall-to-wall in a 38-by 422-foot mural created by artists Marcus Fetch, Dewon Moton and Shawn Fitzwater.

According to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, construction on the new facility is going as planned. The organization will move into the new location at the end of June, and expects to be ready for volunteers by the end of July.
