Each spring, one of Alabama’s most breathtaking natural sights quietly returns along the Cahaba River—and if you’ve never seen it in person, this is your sign to go.
From late April through May, the river comes alive with the rare and stunning Cahaba lily, a native flower known for its delicate white petals and sweet fragrance. These blooms grow only in fast-flowing, rocky shoals, making the Cahaba one of the best (and most unique) places in the country to experience them.
Where to see the Cahaba lilies in Birmingham

The largest and most popular viewing spot is the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge, located about 45 minutes southwest of Birmingham. Here, thousands of lilies bloom across the river each year, creating a truly unforgettable scene.
While you can catch glimpses from the riverbank, the best way to experience the lilies is from the water—getting up close to the blooms as they stretch across the shoals.
Protecting one of Alabama’s rarest natural treasures

Behind the scenes, the Cahaba River Coalition (the result of a recent merge between Cahaba River Society and Cahaba Riverkeeper) is working year-round to ensure these iconic blooms continue to thrive.
Through science, education and community-driven action, the organization is dedicated to preserving and protecting the integrity of the Cahaba River and its watershed—one of the most biodiverse river systems in the country.
That includes hands-on restoration efforts like this recent $8.5M mine reclamation project, which help reduce pollution and improve water quality flowing into the river. Cleaner water and healthier habitats are essential for the survival of species like the Cahaba lily, which depend on very specific conditions to grow.
How you can help protect the Cahaba + its lilies

As interest in the lilies continues to grow each year, so does the need to balance access with preservation.
The Cahaba River Coalition works closely with partners like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to explore ways to expand public access to viewing areas while protecting the delicate ecosystems that make these blooms possible.
That means improving infrastructure, mitigating upstream threats to water quality and helping visitors experience the river in ways that minimize impact on the lilies and their habitat.
It’s all part of a bigger goal: making sure more people can enjoy this natural wonder without putting it at risk.
One of the simplest ways to get involved is by becoming a member of the Cahaba River Coalition. Annual memberships help fund critical work like restoration projects, water quality monitoring and public access improvements.
For $50 a year, members can:
- Join exclusive access to expert-led canoe and kayak tours during peak lily season
- Get priority registration + special rates for river trips
- Learn firsthand about the river’s ecology + history
Support + protect the Cahaba River

With thoughtful stewardship and community support, the Cahaba River can continue to be a place where people connect with nature, and where these rare blooms return year after year. Protecting the river today means ensuring future generations can experience the magic of Cahaba lily season for themselves.
In addition to membership, there are other easy ways to get involved, like the Save the Cahaba specialty license plate, which helps fund conservation efforts across the watershed.

By becoming a member of the Cahaba River Coalition, you’re not only gaining access to unforgettable outdoor experiences, you’re also helping protect the river for future generations.
