In today’s ever-changing healthcare landscape, more patients are choosing outpatient surgical centers over traditional hospitals—and it’s easy to see why. With same-day procedures, convenient locations and streamlined processes, these centers make care easier and less stressful for patients and their families.

In Birmingham, Birchfield Penuel Architects is helping shape this trend by designing welcoming, patient-focused spaces that truly improve the way people experience healthcare. We toured one of the city’s newest facilities to learn more.

A growing trend in modern healthcare, Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASC) are the streamlined, hyper-efficient cousins of traditional hospitals.

While hospitals are built to handle everything from emergency ICU visits to long-term care, ASCs specialize in same-day surgical procedures without the need for an overnight stay. Plus, ASCs can be located closer to where people live—a major boon for rural communities several hours away from a hospital in the nearest major city.

To see what one of these facilities looks like in real life, we toured the Birmingham Heart & Vascular Surgery Center—a new ASC opening soon at the UAB St. Vincent’s East campus.

Set to open in the next few weeks, the Birmingham Heart & Vascular Surgery Center is a new outpatient ASC that will offer a wide range of cardiology and vascular procedures, including:

  • Right + left heart catheterizations
  • Loop implants + explants
  • Pacemaker, defibrillator + stent placements

Jointly owned by the Birmingham Heart Clinic, UAB Medicine and US Heart & Vascular, the new state-of-the-art clinic was designed by local full-service architecture and design firm Birchfield Penuel Architects.

“What initially drew us to Birchfield Penuel Architects was their strong reputation for healthcare design and their ability to balance clinical efficiency with a patient-centered approach. They demonstrated a clear understanding of the complexities involved in ambulatory surgery centers, particularly cardiovascular environments where precision and workflow are critical.”

Since the new Birmingham Heart & Vascular Surgery Center is located within the footprint of the existing UAB St. Vincent’s East, one of the project’s biggest challenges was fitting a highly technical surgical environment into the constraints of an existing building.

“In surgery center design, the number of operating rooms drives everything. Once we established that this facility required three operating rooms, we were able to build the entire program around that decision. From there, we worked with the client to align the design with two primary goals: creating a streamlined patient experience and ensuring staff could work as efficiently as possible.”

While operational efficiency was one goal, patient experience is just as important. Birchfield Penuel Architects took special care to design a calm and supportive environment, from the waiting area and pre-op to surgery and recovery.

“For this project, one of the key strategies was maximizing access to natural light. By locating the operating rooms toward the interior of the space, we were able to reserve the perimeter for patient and staff areas. As a result, nearly every patient bay has access to daylight, which helps reduce patient stress and improves the working environment for staff.”

By blending efficiency with patient care, Birchfield Penuel Architects’ design for the Birmingham Heart & Vascular Surgery Center demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a patient’s healthcare experience.

“[Birchfield Penuel Architect’s] ability to translate complex requirements into a cohesive, functional and aesthetically pleasing environment made the entire process both productive and enjoyable. Ultimately, knowing that the finished space will positively impact patient care and staff efficiency is incredibly rewarding.”
