A new 24/7 medical facility is headed to Valleydale Road. The Hoover Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a conditional-use request for a freestanding emergency department associated with Grandview Medical Center at its meeting Monday, July 6.

The project, submitted under Affinity Hospital LLC, will bring round-the-clock emergency care closer to residents near the Interstate 65 corridor. A freestanding emergency department is a medical facility that provides full, hospital-level emergency care, including diagnostic imaging and lab services, but is physically separate from a main hospital campus.

Once completed, this will be the fifth freestanding ER in the Birmingham metro area. The existing facilities are:

  1. UAB Medical West Freestanding ER (Hoover): 5310 Medford Dr, Hoover, AL 35244
  2. Brookwood Baptist Freestanding ER (Greystone/Inverness): 7131 Cahaba Valley Rd, Birmingham, AL 35242
  3. Grandview Freestanding ER (Trussville): 5542 Vanlerberghe Ln, Trussville, AL 35173
  4. UAB Medicine Gardendale Freestanding ER: 960 Rocket Way, Gardendale, AL 35071

New Grandview emergency room project details

  • Location: 2137 Valleydale Road, situated across from the Lowe’s and Southlake medical complex.
  • Footprint: Facility to be approximately 11,000-square-foot + built on a steep, mountainous site.
  • Capacity: 12 exam rooms, two full-time doctors + a peak staff of about 20 employees.
  • Operations: Open 24/7/365 with a state-mandated helipad for high-acuity patient transfers back to the main hospital.

Valleydale Road traffic and landscape buffer plans

To balance safety and residential privacy, developers highlighted specific site configurations during the meeting:

  • Ambulance access: A dedicated right-in, right-out driveway on Valleydale Road will loop emergency vehicles directly to an ambulance canopy, keeping them entirely separate from pedestrian traffic.
  • Signal updates: A second entrance will tie into the full signalized intersection near Circle K, which developers will modify to accommodate the facility.
  • Residential buffers: Because the site borders single-family residential lots in Indian Springs Village to the south, the plans include a 25-foot undisturbed buffer alongside an additional 25-foot replanted landscape buffer to screen the property.

The project now heads to county permitting before construction can begin.
