New establishment coming soon to Brown Marx Annex in downtown Birmingham

It’s a busy time to be on Birmingham’s Heaviest Corner on Earth. While Ascent Hospitality is busy redeveloping the historic Brown Marx Tower into a dual-branded AC & Element Hotel, local entrepreneur Jesus Mendez has chosen the adjoining Brown Marx Annex as the future home for his newest endeavor, El Tigre.

New establishment coming soon to downtown Birmingham

In the early 20th century, the intersection of 20th Street N. and 1st Avenue N. was given a promotional nickname, the Heaviest Corner on Earth. The nickname was inspired by the near-simultaneous construction of four of the tallest buildings in the Southeast:

• The Woodward Building (1902)
• The Brown Marx Building (1906)
• The Empire Building (now the Elyton Hotel) (1909)
• The American Trust and Savings Bank Building (now the John Hand Building/Landing Tower) (1912)

Located on the northeast corner of the Heaviest Corner on Earth, the Brown Marx Building is a 16-story office tower currently being renovated by Ascent Hospitality.

The neighboring Brown Marx Annex—located at 2012 1st Avenue N. and constructed in 1909—will be the new home for El Tigre, a new concept from local entrepreneur Jesus Mendez. Jesus announced the project on social media, sharing a photo of the storefront and stating it will be the “future home of @el_tigrebham”

While Jesus has not yet revealed many details about El Tigre, he and his team are behind several popular establishments in the Birmingham area, including:

• Salud Taqueria
• Adiós
• The Louis Bar at The Pizitz Food Hall
• Unos Tacos at The Pizitz Food Hall
