Forestry. Community Engagement. Security. Data Engineering. These are not the first jobs that come to mind if you think about jobs at Regions in Birmingham. But I recently got to speak with four associates who do just that. Keep reading for their stories, including what about the company’s culture keeps them coming back for more.

Evergreen Week is a time to celebrate employees in the most unique ways

From September 16-20, during their annual Evergreen Week, Regions celebrates the people who work there. It’s like a cross between homecoming, a family reunion and employee appreciation.

We thought it would be fun to feature four people you would never imagine working at a bank.

1. Ty Lollar is a Registered Forester

Ty Lollar has been with Regions for a year and a half. His current role is Trust Property Manager in the Natural Resource Department.

  • What he does: Timberland management—”We grow trees and oversee the harvesting. Everything you can think of that’s going on out there; we’re doing it. This includes land management, timber marketing, infrastructure and more.”
  • Favorite part about the culture: “The people around me have a wealth of knowledge. Being able to collaborate with everyone helps me grow professionally and personally. I can go to anybody and somebody’s always got the answer.”

2. Susan Clowdus is all about giving back

Susan Clowdus (Bham Now)

Susan Clowdus is Vice President of Community Affairs, and she’s been with the company for 37 years. She started at AmSouth, and stayed on after the 2005 merger.

  • What she does: Works with the United Way team in Alabama and across the Regions footprint. This includes recruiting volunteers for the local Visiting Allocation Team, participating in Women United and supporting the Annual Campaign.
  • Favorite part about the culture: “They allow us to take a day off to go volunteer. That says a lot about what the bank thinks about making our communities healthy.”

3. Carlos Hall works in security

Before joining Regions five and a half years ago, Carlos Hall worked with the Hoover Police Department. His current title is Senior Vice President Area Security Manager Regions Bank Corporate Security.

  • What he does: He has a team of 20 investigators who work from the Carolinas to the tip of Florida. They investigate fraud, internal fraud and anything dealing with the security of the bank and its personnel.
  • Favorite part about the culture: “They have a free mental health program that all associates can use. Evergreen is coming up where we celebrate all the employees, and they have diversity and inclusion programs.”

4. Jessica Barnett is a Data Engineer Manager

Jessica Barnett started at Regions five and a half years ago right after graduating from UAB. She’s excited to be coming up on her fifth Evergreen anniversary.

She started in “model risk” before moving to her current team as a machine learning engineer. Next, she moved up to manage her own team within data engineering.

  • What she does: Move data within the bank to allow it to get to different applications. This helps other teams who access those apps get the data they need.
  • Favorite part about the culture: “One of the missions of Regions is to put people first. Regions does that with employees and we do that with each other when we interact. Regions is also very supportive about internal movement and growing individuals’ careers.”

Jessica also enjoys some of the fun ways that Regions provides associates with continuing education opportunities:

“One of the fun things we do is Data Science Day, which has a lot of fun games. We bring a 40-foot race track into Regions to train a model to drive race cars. It gets everybody using machine learning—even people who aren’t doing it day-to-day.”

I had no idea one bank could have so many different types of non-financial roles.
