In 2016, longtime friends Aaron Hamilton and Wess Gregg founded Sanctum Comics and Tattoos in Avondale. Both shared a passion for comic books and had experience working in other Birmingham-area comic shops, including The Comic Strip and Kingdom Comics.

“I’ve been a tattoo artist for 20 years, but I’ve always wanted to open my own comic shop too. I couldn’t run both businesses by myself, so I reached out to Wess to see if he’d be interested in doing this with me. He was easily bribed, so it worked it!”

At Sanctum, you’ll find a wide variety of comic books and more, including:

  • Brand new comics, available every Wednesday (New Comic Book Day)
  • Back issues
  • Classic comics
  • Graphic novels
  • Paperback books

“Our personal tastes are geared more towards alternative comics, but we carry something for everyone! Anything you can think of, we carry.”

In addition to comics, Sanctum has a full tattoo studio for its three artists, available by appointment only:

Recently, Sanctum Tattoos and Comics left their Avondale home of eight years for a new space in downtown Birmingham.

“We are friends with the owner of the building, and he had been fixing this place up around the time that we started looking for a new location. We have more space here and the location is great.”
