Happy Monday, Birmingham—get ready to start the new week with buzzy news around town. Four new businesses (including a toy shop + Mexican cuisine) are headed to The Magic City, and we’re saying a sad goodbye to four others. Let’s take a look.
Openings
1. Aqua-Tots Swim School | Hoover
Aqua-Tots Swim Schools, a global chain with 147 locations, recently opened a state-of-the-art 6,000 square feet franchise in Hoover offering the renowned swim lesson curriculum.

2. Mexi King’s Grill | Green Springs Highway
Mexi King’s Grill, a new restaurant showcasing a blend of Mexican and American cuisine, is preparing for its grand opening. Located at 801 Green Springs Highway in Homewood, this new establishment is founded by two longtime friends with a shared vision of starting their own restaurant. Expect daily specials, including perks like kids eating free on Mondays, Dollaritas for Thirsty Thursday and Saturday night karaoke.

3. Chipotle Mexican Grill | Moody
Moody, get ready to give a warm welcome to the newest restaurant in town, Chipotle Mexican Grill! The new restaurant is expected to open in the former Krystal location. Get excited for amazing burritos soon.

4. Hattie’s Toyland | Trussville
Hattie’s Toyland is coming soon to the Trussville Entertainment District in Spring 2024. Prepare for shelves piled high with a variety of toys, whimsical animals and a candy counter offering lollipops and vintage candy, along with dye-free and gluten-free options. Plus, there will be a dedicated story-time nook and engaging family-friendly activities.
Closings
1. Birmingham Candy Co. | Downtown
Cherished Magic City sweet shop Birmingham Candy Co. announced that they are closing their location in The Pizitz Food Hall on 2nd Ave North in Downtown Birmingham. The Birmingham Candy Company is known for its fresh local products and handmade treats. Don’t worry, though—owners Wayne and Cassie Bolden plan to keep the Crestline location open.
2. Five restaurant & bar | Lakeview
After 12 years at 744 29th St S, Birmingham, Five appears to have closed their location in Lakeview. Last week, a Bham Now follower shared that they had seen workers carrying furniture out of the establishment. Presently, the building stands vacant, and the Birmingham location has been removed from Five’s website.
3. Bluegrass Barbeque | Moody
Bluegrass Barbeque has closed its doors after 11 years of serving amazing comfort food in a lively atmosphere. The restaurant will be deeply missed in the Moody community.
4. SMOKE Bistro | Pizitz Food Hall
SMOKE Bistro located inside of the Pizitz Food Hall has closed. The restaurant was known for smoked wings and delicious soul food with a barbecue flare. Head over to the new SLIDE Cafe, for amazing sliders crafted by Chef Raquel Ervin.
