In early December, Vine Pair—a digital media company specializing in content regarding drink culture—highlighted the best breweries across the country—including Birmingham District Brewing Co.
To get a better understanding of the most popular breweries in the country, the author surveyed informed professionals at beer bars—establishments that serve a variety of beers from multiple different breweries.
When it came to Birmingham District Brewing Co., Vine Pair spoke with Jake Herron, the package beer manager at Hop City Beer & Wine. Jake complimented the work of Birmingham District Brewing Co.’s brewmaster Jimmy Sumpter, noting the impressive variety of beers that he produces, “from excellently balanced fruited sour ales, to the best cold IPAs around.”
As for Jake’s favorite beer at Birmingham District Brewing Co.? The Birmingham Pilsner, which Jake claims is, “crisp, clean, and hits a really great balance of German and American takes on the classic style.”
Bham Now spoke with Cale Sellers, co-owner of Birmingham District Brewing Co., to see what this honor means for the brewery—which recently celebrated its fifth anniversary.
“Birmingham District Brewing Co. is a family-owned business that we started in my garage. We celebrated our fifth anniversary in November and then got highlighted by Vine Pair in December, which is a very humbling honor. We’ve put our heads down and done a lot of hard work to make the highest quality products we can, and now that hard work is starting to pay off.”

Located on the corner of 2nd Avenue South and 22nd Street South, Birmingham District Brewing Co. has operated at The Battery in Birmingham since 2018. The brewery—whose name, logo and design pay homage to Birmingham’s mining heritage—is co-owned by Cale and Jennifer Sellers, John and Maggie Kueven, Brad and Cheri Kueven and Matt Gray.

“Lose Your Way is our flagship Hazy IPA—we’ve had it since day one, and it has become one of the most popular beers at Birmingham District Brewing Co. It is a very approachable IPA that we’ve seen win over people who don’t like IPAs. Another popular brew is our Birmingham Pilsner, which is a light, clean lager that is very approachable to people who are just getting into the craft beer scene.”
